Just finished a 500mile first stage leg of a European road trip, spent maybe 15/20mins in the car sorting out accommodation issues with the battery on for light / air etc and the low battery message came on, thankfully the car started fine. Should I be concerned? In my mind after such a long run that seems a very short time before the battery would be low.

This depends upon the age of the battery. If it's a few years old it may be first signs of needing a change. Mine did this a couple times too, started getting low battery warning when it was around 5 years old so it didn't do too bad.

I risked a few weeks then changed it. No problems since.

Same thing happened to me but I had the radio on for maybe 10 mins, started fine. That was about 3 years ago and I'm on the same battery, I'm sure someone said it's a feature of the car and it's not the actual measuring of the voltage in the battery.

I wouldn't worry about this - there's plenty of reporting of people having the radio on - or interior lights etc - for a fairly brief period of time and then receiving the warning. I certainly agree with some of the advice you have already had and I think it's one to 'note' but don't let it spoil the trip! Enjoy!!!
