Firefox and winamp crashing.
Discussion
My computer keeps shutting down firefox and winamp and coming up with the classic 'send a report to micorsoft?' box. In fact it does it with all programs, just more with these two than most. Im running xp home but have professional on a disk, is it worth rebooting to professional instead? (which I don't know how to do)
Or is it likely to be a virus?

Try the obvious first of loading your PC with anti-malware products (Ad-Aware, Spybot, Avast's AntiVir / Grisofts AVG) and get rid of most of the crap they find and see where that gets you.
I'm presuming you have all the suitable firewalls (I use Kerio, although Sygate Personal Firewall, Zonealarm and BlackICe are all good freebies).

there's your problem matey! I had to install winXP on my machine back in October time and literally had it connected to the web for 10mins before getting attacked left-right and centre with virii, trojans... and that was with some older software on. Ended up wiping every hdd I had completely to get rid of the crap and building it up step by step using another PC to download all the latest software.
You'll need:
A AntiVirus program.
I use www.avast.com as the updates are regular, it's not massively popular yet and does a great job of protecting my PC. A lot of people use AVG 7.0 from www.grisoft although that may becoming a little too popular for it's own good.
A Firewall.
I used www.sygate.com personal, free firewall for ages but it always caused a few problems on startup and I was never sure on it's ability to stop programs. I swapped to the free one from www.kerio.com/ which started off been damned annoying in it's level of security but I now sit with peace of mind (it stops programs opening others, programs piggybacking connections to the web...).
Anti Spyware tools.
goto www.lavasoftusa.com and get the free version of Ad-Aware, download and run that (getting any of the latest updates) and goto www.safer-networking.org/en/ and get spybot and do the same.
That should get rid of most of the crap that is installed on your machine, but personally I'd recommend you get those programs from a PC you know is virus/malware free, burn them to disk and start again - it's often far easier to do that than it is to try and clean a pc up (I bet you don't defragment your disks either

)Cheers, installed reccomended anti virus and firewall software. Firewall software made the computer crash everytime I connected to the wireless network so I uninstalled it.
surprisingly anti virus came up with no hits even with all the updates. Makes me thing something else is responsible for the random crashing. I believe a new power supply (always been a bit dodgy) and a reboot is on the agenda!
