Tomato plants

Just been fettling my tomatoes (all coming along very nicely )

Wonderful aroma from the leaves, has anyone tried using the leaves as well as the fruit? Off cuts at the moment go straight into the compost bin.

Not used because they are generally thought of as toxic. This may or may not be true though... read this interesting article.

They are certainly toxic enough that my sister's cat incurred some serious veterinary bills after chewing on the tomato plant on her windowsill.

Tomato leaves pulverised in water supposedly make a great insecticide for aphids on roses, etc. They're members of the nightshade family.

I haven't tried this, but this is purely because I don't have any tomato plants.

They seem to do a pretty good job of putting off slugs and snails.

Enjoy the smell. The fact we don't regularly eat abundant Tomato leaves is a giveaway that they aren't worth eating.

Try adding a few of the stems attached to the tomato. They have a very deep earthy flavour.
