Me and a colleague have had an interesting idea after reading the side of a packet of Jaffa cakes.

They only have 46 calories per biscuit / cake and 1 gram of fat each.

So we were thinking that we might limit ourselves to a diet comprising of vitamin tablets (the GNC vitamin tablets I take claim to have 100% of the RDA of most vitamins) and 36 jaffa cakes with no other food.

That would give us 1656 calories per day, nearly 1000 down on the recommended 2500 for an adult man.

My question to the learned PH audience is this: What is the worst thing that might happen if we were to embark on a jaffa cake only diet for a week.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Oi,

I have never seen food threads on PH, apart from the odd biscuit ramble.... I go on a diet and there's already two of the buggers.

Stop it!

I don't think they'd fill you up either.

I'm presuming a large portion of the calories is sugar (disguised as carbohydrates)?

Considering that refined sugar has no dietary benefit whatsoever, I think you'd be:

a) headaches after 24 hours
b) problems sleeping due to high glucose levels
c) dizzy spells after 48 hours
d) sickness and death within a few weeks

Yeah, good diet that. Want to lose weight? Cut down on the carbohydrates, limit yourself to 1000 calories a day (meat fish and veg), and do more stuff (like exercise).

I'm not so sure. Jaffa Cakes have a "Smashing Orangey bit" - so clearly they're also a good source of Vitamin C and fibre...

Right, I've emailed United Biscuits customer support to see their views, I will let you know their reply.

And thanks for all your replies.

It reminds me of the time when as a student me and my flatmate decided (following an article in the news) to try and turn ourselves yellow by drinking copious amounts of Sunny Delight.

I'll let you know if I go all smashing and orangey.

Speaking of diets. Is anyone familiar with the Slimming World diet? Some food is 'free' but you are allowed 'sins' each day. Chaps are allowed 15. It reckons a large donner kebab is 10! Must be something wrong there.

Probably the case that no-one has worked out the nutritional value of an elephant's leg.

Jaffa cakes are a big problem for me - once I start eating them I just can't stop. It's not unusual for me to polish off a whole packet without even noticing. Made worse given that they're usually not even mine to eat! :O
This then usually reads to a big sugar rush, loss of concentration and me needing to go for run - not always convenient, especially when you're in work and all suited up.

So how wise is a diet solely consisting of Jaffa cakes? Not very, but by god would it be fun! However, I do reckon you'll get tired of constantly buzzing your tits off

Go for it!

Do you know how the Minimum Daily Requirement was figured? It will make for some 'interesting' reading. It seems that the 'minimum' is literally that- the minimum needed to maintain health - in a sedentary person, like a prisoner or a research subject, not active people.
