Evening all, I'm looking to pick some brains if I can... I'm looking at a 599 with less than 20,000 miles on the clock and I've just been told the discs are 58% worn. That's seems, in my limited knowledge very high? Does that mean it's been tracked or I should be steering clear or is that normal? Appreciate it depends how you drive but... 58%

Thank you in advance. Any other helpful tips please feel free.

Best,

Mike

I suspect it's done some work on track or at least been driven hard. No reason to avoid it though just factor the potential costs into any offer.

It's quite a heavy car so that doesn't sound too out of the ordinary if driven as intended. A friend had his 42,000 mile car needing front discs. Replacement disc cost is not the big worry it used to be, do a search for 'Sicom'.

Most Ferraris have seen the track and ceramics are a disposable item.

say 4 trackdays a year 3 years and you will need to replace them, better than a car never used that is what they were designed for its in a Ferraris DNA - or should be

+1 and if you're not intending to track it or similar then they should last you. My Pork has ceramics and they seem indestructible (famous last words - I hope not!)

Yes agreed, I want a car that's been used as intended but not abused. The salesperson I have been dealing with at first told me I didn't need a reading on the brakes because they would be so low being ceramic, so when I pushed and then get that answer it may be looks worse.

Thanks all, much appreciated

Perhaps try to negotiate brake pad replacement all round as a goodwill gesture. They aren't a lot more expense than standard pads.

Question on Ceramics... Why no brake dust??? Love the fact my wheels are always clear but just curious as to where the spent pad particles go?

So I've now been told by the same dealer that the wear may be higher than average because they aren't used enough.... Apparently they decompose sitting in the garage!? Clearly I have lots to learn about ceramics!

In their defence however they did offer something towards replacements so cant ask for more than that.

Think they're talking utter bo*****s. The wear indicator on the dash is merely an algorithm of how many times the pedal has been pressed, for how long and how hard, also how fast the car was going. It isn't going to change because the car's been sitting for 10 minutes or 1000 Years.

Did you get the wear rates for both front and rear? they're measured separately, it should also be noted pads should be changed at the same time

Main dealer cost is around £13k for discs, pads and labour, using Sicom can reduce this to nearer £3,500 plus some local labour to remove/ fit

Factor in £15,000 to replace carbon ceramics! On my 612 One to One, it's 8 years old with 11,000 miles with 10% wear on brakes. He's definitely talking crap!

If you really want the car go back to him and ask him to replace the discs! That will shut him up.....

Good luck

Depends on how they are maintained . Cooling them down and blowing the holes free of dust correctly can hugely effect shelf life . You can tear through badly maintained ceramics in surprisingly short time .
