new job offer but can't decide

I have got a new job offer from Manchester. but can't make up my mind.

Here is our current situation;

- We have been living in very good village, where there is no crime, and full of friendly people. Locality is great, for closeby amenities, and a good commutable train line.

- Our relationship with our landlord is also very good, he hasn't raised the rent for 3 years now but might do so next year or later. Property in our neighbours are being let for £300 more than what we are paying and landlord is well aware of this.

- Kids are in very good schools (Ofsted rating 1), we are very well settled here but we don't know for how long we can afford this property, because in 2-3 years’ time this rent will definitely be increased.

- We have lived in Manchester before, for a good few years, so we know the areas and we do have some close family friends there.

- This new job is paying 6k more. But travelling will be required, (depends on projects) which is all paid for, i am not keen on frequent traveling.

Rent market in north has really gone up, I wasn't expecting it would be that much... we originally wanted to relocate to the north, so that we could save a bit more money. As rent was cheaper a few years ago, but its not that cheap anymore.

Overall I will be saving £400 (salary + rent) extra a month in Manchester, but don't know if it’s worth taking this job now.... I know the job market very well, and I wouldn't be able to get this similar kind of offer from anywhere in north. This offer is equalent to what I could get here in south.

Whenever I think about Manchester , it feels like we are moving to less well off area. Don't know if maybe its just me.... because it always takes 4-6 months to get settle in new place.

You listed all the "personal life" factors in front of the £6k increase.

Dunno if that's deliberate or not, but to me it says you already know what's important to you.

The way you have written your post indicates you do not wish to take up the new job offer.

£6k is about £350 a month more after tax? Less if you're in a higher tax bracket.

Would I move from what sounds like a nice setup where i'm happy and add travelling which I didn't enjoy as well as being away from the family for £350? No chance.

Stay where you are and worry about a rent increase when it comes along.

Must be some landlord if he's willing to let £300 per month go from the rent. What if he suddenly does put the rent up to the going rate? That would make the move even more attractive.

In this equation of job moving and extra money, have you not considered buying a house?

£400 includes rent difference and it can be £500 if i cash benefits as a part of my salary. They are offering list of benefits worth £100 per month (certain percentage of final salary)and i have an option to take £100 as a part of my monthly salary.

I am going to leave my current job sooner or later....

Current employer don't give pay raise....i have never worked for this kind of company before....we were told in Jan this year that there will be some pay raise and bonus by the end of July but received an email few weeks ago from the line manager saying there is no update on this yet and he is keep pushing head office to give us some info on this.....same old crap

But I do appreciate that my job is save and people I work with are nice.

We have spoken to him and he said he has no plans to increase the rent at this time. He fully appreciate how difficult it can be just to get by, which is why he has not done so in the three years we have been there. He also said that he is not a professional landlords and only rent out his home as his job requires him to live on site and he needs to cover his outgoings. So long as these remain the same, he is happy to leave things as they are. He cannot give us an absolute guarantee that he would not increase the rent at some time in the future should this change.

For the sums involved and your clear focus on your quality of life - I'd use it as a lever with existing employer "this is my market value", rather than taking the job.
