A few questions about a potential Skoda Octavia VRS Purchase
Discussion
Hi,
Thinking of buying a VRS Estate DSG Petrol as my work commute is normally 2 1/2 miles each way to the station mostly with the occasional longer trip.
I want DSG as i would like an auto, my questions are is it worth the extra for the following extras:
Panoramic Roof
Heated Seats - Front
Leather Seats
Canton Audio
Is the basic sat nav any good? and is the heated screen worth it?
What is a realistic fuel economy on the petrol DSG on a reasonable run at say 80 mph on the motorway?
What is the opinion on the best colour?
Thinking of getting it on a 3 year PCP any suggestions of good dealers to go to, based in Oxfordshire.
TIA

I have the 3.6 awe DSG Superb estate and I have to say that I have been very impressed with the Skoda product. In short to your questions:
Early DSG 6 speed is a great unit. Ensure oil service is carried out on it at circa 40k miles though.
Later 7 speed is currently subject of a recall due to a change in oil (synthetic to mineral I think or vice versa). Plenty on the www about it.
Pano roof - brilliant bit of kit and worth it in my opinion.
Leather.....I have the half leather/alcantara which I believe is available on the Octavia too? Leather is lovely but slippy/slidey when pushing on and can be cold in winter/warm in summer.
I have heated seats front and back and it keeps SWMBO and the kids happy in winter (or I can annoy them in summer with a flick of the switch
)
I have the Columbus stereo with upgrade (amp, TV etc) and it's a great bit of kit. Speakers can get pushed at the top end but I think, that's damping in the doors causing the issue...to be sorted.
MPG....don't ask me! I still get 30mpg on a run and 20 when hooning on the paddles in sport mode....
I like white cars....mine is white but the Octavia looks great in that Metallic blue and the red too. Decisions, decisions....
Www.Briskoda forum has a load of useful information on it and the Octavia boys and girls are always quite busy on the forums.
Enjoy the car....

Can't comment on much but I have a diesel Octavia VRS (great car - loaded to the hilt with toys). That said, it doesn't have heated seats, just leather (which are very nice). Sat nav is good (ours has full ipod integration too - not sure if that's standard with the sat nav or not) - it's the Columbus system which seems great and we've never had a problem with it (ours is three years old now). Only annoyance with it is that is doesn't do full postcode entry, but that's the only gripe. The traffic updates work really well and have diverted me around potential problems on more than one occasion.
Ours in metallic black - which is very nice, though as always, tricky to keep clean. I do like the metallic blue (Race blue, I think it's called) but they're getting quite common now, especially as Skoda seem to do a very similar colour for their lesser Octavias. Not sure if they still do a charcoal grey metallic, which I also used to like the look of too - but black still won for me.
Good luck!

Current motor is the previous octavia vrs petrol with dsg. It's averaging 35mpg over the past couple of years. I do about 12 miles a day and a few short runs to the gym or shops etc. it's great and on occasion cruising at 70mph on the way home on that 12 mile journey I have seen near 40mpg.
The newer model would be even better. I had to replace the octavia this month and dos look at the newer one but was disappointed on the interior quality compared to my current and ended up with a 340i touring

I'm just over the border from South Oxfordshire and bought my VRS back in March, its the petrol estate with dsg in Race Blue. colour choice is personal but having owned a Octavia VRS in blue before i know how nice they can look, I have to say if i was leaving it in a station car park i'd be tempted to get something a little more muted so not to attract attention Thinking of buying a VRS Estate DSG Petrol as my work commute is normally 2 1/2 miles each way to the station mostly with the occasional longer trip.

Its always hard to tell someone what options to go for but personally the roof didnt seem worthwhile to me, not with climate but I'm not a huge fan of sunroofs , those that have it like it but I'm glad I didn't go for it
I went for heated seats though , I didn't see the value in leather the stock cloth is quite nice but do like a warm botty on cold winter days
Canton , is awesome , the stock sound system is pretty dire in comparison, if you do spec canton though you would really need the full sat nav option as well, "Columbus" which makes it an expensive proposition but if you enjoy your music then its a must really.
Options worth having imo
Front and rear parking sensors
Sunset glass
Spare wheel
Variable boot floor in the estate.
and the black pack looks nice on certain colours
I've just come back from 1500 miles on the continent and got 38-41 consistently with mostly 75-85mph use, thats fully laden with 3 adults, day to day I get 35mpg. I use the normal mode on the gearbox most of the time, using E - Economy mode disengages the drive on over run and can add a few extra mpg but I don't like the "woolly" feel but i do sometime use it when cruising and flick into sport if i want extra engine braking. The car does prefer super unleaded 98+ though and its recommended although it will run on 95
They are great cars I'm really chuffed with mine and had the 2.0 litre 170 Diesel Superb before, the diesel seems about 10mpg better on fuel so like you for the miles I do the petrol was a no brainer and a much better engine , loads of torque and good pace
As for good dealers , not a lot really . I got a poor offer from my local dealer in Newbury so went to Carwow.co.uk and had my car supplied by Sparshatts in Botley, Southampton, saved a few grand by doing that and they seemed ok. Ridgeway in Oxford and Newbury etc are ok for servicing
