Any chance of a small M car?
Discussion
Maybe test drive a M2 when it comes out. Obviously the footprint might not work for you both in length and maybe even more crucially for b-road fun in width but it could be a cracker nonetheless. A bit early to rule it out quite yet. Shame they won't do the slightly shorter hatch equivalent but maybe a M135i with added LSD and upgraded springs would be a decent steer ? Unless of course it HAS to be a full fat M for badge snobbery reasons

Possibly a homer simpson car. I love M cars and I love small cars, any chance of one in the works. 4 metres long or less, 2 seats plus a bench, manual gearbox and rwd.
No is the answer to that.As said by others, the M2 which will be out at the end of the year will be the smallest rwd M car available at any time in the near future as BMW have said there will be no M version of the 1 Series in it's current rwd format (and it's only 100mm shorter than a M235 anyway) and the M2 is going to be close to the M235 in terms of length and that is 4.47m.
Even my CSL felt huge for the roads down here.
I'd love an e30 but want something that I can keep outside and use everyday with a warranty. E30 dimensions, m power engine, rwd, bucket seats, decent brakes, simple interior; I guess they don't have a car small enough to base this on and probably a market big enough to want it.
I've never got on with Z cars and their long bonnets, don't know why.

In a nutshell. What you are looking for, isn't ever going to be made in the future by BMW or likely any other manufacturer.
You should have bought a 1M when they came out 4 years ago, as this was the last chance to get something as close to your spec as possible.

There probably isn't a market, but I'd love something like that. If the weight was low enough then a high-revving n/a 4-cyl with a bit of M-car magic putting out say c.260bhp would be perfect for itI'd love an e30 but want something that I can keep outside and use everyday with a warranty. This would be the showcase car for what the M Division can do when it puts its mind to a task, even within current emission and safety limitations, but alas it will never happen
I agree the E46 CSL is slightly too big for it, but E30 proportions are ideal for most B-roads

E36 M3 Evo sounds about right. Not a very big car at all by today's standards, reliable, still a fast car, handles well out of the box and going up in value.
Obviously if you are looking for a new car like that, you won't get one. That's why the old cars are being snapped up. No toys to stop you playing
