Hi,

Contemplating selling my RS6 and heading down the SL route.
Aside from the air suspension foibles, is the anything else to be concerned about?
Do all cars have this suspension system?
After market changes available?

Mpg?
Currently can't get over 17 so I guess anything more is a bonus!
Is there much difference between 350 and 500?

Get an SL55 the 350 is s l o w the 500 still not really fast but the SL55 a glorious experience with one of the best MB engines of recent time.

The 350 isn't that different in bhp terms but the 500 has more torque so feels more suited, the 55 is great but expensive to run (one leaking leg which for means replacing both & replacing the ABC pump left warranty wise with a nigh on 5k bill) so I'd look at the 500 if you want to keep the bork factor lower.

Budget is about the £10k so that sadly rules out the SL55.
Not overly fussed about it being super quick, just think it would be nice to float about in smile

10k - don't bother with an ABC car. It will ruin you. I guarantee it.

I've had every horror story going on the R230 happen to me (can't br arsed going through them all now) and my honest sincere advice to you is this: budget of £10k: you can't afford it. They're a very very bad car. I'd maybe take a punt on an SL350

Keep your RS.

Or buy a nice R129 SL500. Awesome build and a wonderful car.

So does that mean the SL350 doesn't have the ABC?

It was an option. It is standard on the other models.

I have had my SL55 for 5 years and had the ABC fluid and filter changed and so far no issues.

I do realise however that it could screw me over in the future but the SL55 is just so fast and comfortable and easy to drive that I haven't wanted to sell it.

My advice is that you cannot really run these cars on a strict budget, I would imagine that an SL500 does not have significantly different running costs to the SL55. Please take a look at 'my garage', repairs are running at ~£1400/year, which is the price of a good warranty for BMW/Mercedes/Porsche. Servicing through a specialist and insurance is very reasonable.

I've had my SL55 for well over 6 years and some of the older repair costs could now be done at a lower price with forum/internet/specialist knowledge available now. Also premium tyres are almost the same price as mid-tier tyres were historically which can make a big difference.

I use the SL55 as a daily hence the mileage, and it can almost do anything and everything! Yet my friend's Porsche 997.1 GT3 destroyed me on the 1/4 mile recently, maybe a visit to Acid at MSL is on the cards.....

I think you need more bhp wink mine has had a Weistec software upgrade on the gearbox which sharpened it up no end plus the 696bhp at the crank is a great help when you want to be hitting low 11.2 second 1/4 mile times & seeing off pesky GT3's well at least until some bends lol
