My 5 year old Skoda Yeti 1.8TSI Elegance has been using quite a bit of oil for a couple of years now, about a litre every thousand miles. I reported it a couple of years ago to my Skoda dealership who checked it for leaks but didn't pursue it any further because because the consumption was within Skoda specification.

Last week it developed a mis-fire and the engine management light came on I reported it to the dealership and they took it in on Monday. They have come back with 'the cam cover gasketing around the plugs has failed and oil is going into the plug recess running down the spark plug (??) and into the combustion chambers ruining the plugs. Their solution is to do a complete top end overhaul which will cost me £1300. Needless to say I got straight onto Skoda customer service and explained that if oil was getting past the plugs the compression would be goosed, not only that but every compression stroke the oil would be pumped out of the plug recess and cover the engine bay! I'm waiting on them coming back to me, hopefully tomorrow, I cant wait!!

Sorry to read this....

The good thing is that you had already flagged it with Skoda who by all accounts said it was 'ok'. Hopefully something positive will come out of this despite the anxiety and inconvenience.

Is it a known problem on the Yeti? A quick trawl on www.Briskoda might help. Useful stuff on there.

That is an absolute fantasy!

The worst case scenario is that you need new cam cover gaskets and a set of plugs. If the oil was passing the plugs it's because they were not properly tightened. At 5 years old they need replaced anyway.

Tell them to do one.

Not just tell them to do one but go in and see the dealer principle & ask him why his mechanics don't seem to have a fking clue how an internal combustion engine works . Either that or why his company is trying to rip you off

Its one or the other......

Well Skoda have finally come back to me and tell me that the Garage are sticking to their guns regarding the problem! They are sending images to Skoda and I've managed to get the guy I'm dealing with to discuss it with their engineering experts, however he has told me that it could be as late as next Monday before he comes back to me.rolleyes

OK it's finally been explained to me properly, apparently the cam cover is integral with the camshaft bearings so to remove it you first have to remove the timing chain etc. Still expensive but at least its starting to make sense.

Still don't understand this statement

"oil is going into the plug recess running down the spark plug (??) and into the combustion chambers ruining the plugs."

But suspect it may be incorrect & that oil is just pooling round the plugs. If the top half of the cam cover includes the top half of the cam bearings then that's a bit nuts but would explain why they've got to disassemble the timing belt etc first. to remove the cover

Seems a lot like one of those "3 hours to get to a sidelight bulb" jobs.

Still a lot of money for a belt change & cover removal/gasket replacement though IMO.

My experience of VW group main dealers is that when the car gets to five or six years old they will suddenly find a number of jobs like this which suddenly need doing. Whether they are want you to trade in or pay through the nose for the work I'm not sure.

Time to find a good, knowledgable indy I reckon.
