Glasses - Educate Me

I've had a few cheaper pairs of specs, mainly for when I was still MTB'ing so I knew they would get covered in crap and scratched, which they did. Had a pair of Salice's (ITA006's) for a couple of years with an interchangeable lens which have been great for all weathers and they have worn pretty well ... not much damage to the lens even after some pretty crappy winter riding. You just need to make sure you clean them with care and they should last.

There's also an element of aesthetics with glasses ... some pairs just look like they're so fragile and some are just plain ugly.

I've never liked Oakley's, mainly because I've felt their over priced at £200 a pair but everyone that has them raves about them. A mate of mine has a pair which must be 15 years old and I think he's replaced about every piece of them under warranty. Well this morning I cracked ... I was about to order some Jawbreakers but not 100 convinced so got pair of the Radar EV Pitch's. We'll see how I get on with these and if the Salice's get used.

BTW, I paid £94.49 from Winstanleys as they're having sale with around 40% off which I think is a bargain.

I'm a bit of a sunglasses freak , more idiocy really i seem to have this strange shade's fetish, i can't seem to get on with Oakleys at all although i have a pair of Half jackets & i really do not like them.

I have recently discovered Rudy Project glasses & i really like the way that you can bend the nose pads & arms to fit your face

I would definitely opt for Photochromic lenses , i jus can't get on with the Polarized lens.


These are my last two buys & i really love them both










Maybe i just have an odd shaped head or something but i find the Rudy's spot on.

I've tried oakleys, fake oakleys, dhb, lidl and aldi ones and the dhb ones I got free as a referral gift are by far the best

Lense colour makes quite a difference to the contrast of things when you're riding. I like a yellow / orange lense for off-road riding and red lense for road. This is because yellow/orange increase the contrast between trail, rocks, flora and trees whereas red intensifies brakes & indicators which can be useful. Also transitions style lenses are nice and Oakleys are good for that as they have a quick transition time, very useful for when you zip out of tree cover and into bright sunshine and vice versa.

Agree with the chap above, I think the cheapo DHB ones my Mrs uses for running are better fitting and more comfortable than my Oakleys.

I have always been a fan of Rudy Projects for both skiing and riding.

This year I invested in the additional prescription inserts for skiing wow they made a difference so looking forward to wearing them on my new bike.

<£10, look the part, decent lenses, choice of tints/coatings, cheap enough to have multiple pairs/be considered disposable.

I got a £30 pair from Decathlon with dark, yellow, pink and clear lenses. They even look perfectly fine. I can't honestly think what would improve them.

Despite having bought various (cheaper end of the market) 'sports' glasses over the years, my go-to glasses for riding are always my old military issue ESS 'ICE' glasses...

Just done a search for "ESS glasses" and there're loads, worthwhile changing the item location to UK though.

There was a chap somewhere (can't remember if PH or elsewhere now) who suggested getting cheap ones in bulk from the internets and binning them when they inevitably break. At £0.53/pair it seems like a moderately sensible idea.

I'm an Oakleys fan, for cycling I have got a pair or Race Jackets with the trail prizm lenses, which work really well in the woods. They also came with clear lenses, which can be swapped out for riding at night etc. For road cyclig I'd be looking at the road prizm lenses.

I bought some Oakleys, within one or two rides the lenses were losing their coating.
Replaced under warranty but then the second pair did the same I gave up.

Turns out the internet is full of stories of this happening.

I don't know the brand of the current pair but I went for reactorlight lenses as I couldn't be arsed faffing about changing lenses during a 24 hour ride.

I've had them for over a year and the only issue is they're slightly more comfortable under the helmet straps than over, which we all know is just wrong.

I used the Aldi ones for ages paid £1.50 each for about 10 pairs as I always lose them

Never realised these fitted my head perfectly as bought a more expensive pair and they slip all over my head!

The lenses in the Aldi ones aren't great but adequate

Would like some Oakleys but I would lose them

I'm a glasses wearer of over 30 years and when I wear the Aldi/Lidl ones it makes me feel like I'm sitting about another foot higher than normal. Really crappy lenses, can't be good for depth perception.
