Hi all,

I was driving my wife's 2012 Seat Leon 1.6 TDI with the DSG box (with 50,000 miles) on the M25 this morning.

At 70mph, after driving for about 15 minutes, the engine suddenly shut down. Prior to this it had been running fine. I coasted to a halt.

The electrics were ok on and no warning lights that I recollect.

Tried to restart but the starter motor did not respond. All was silent. Tried a number of times and was about to call the recovery when I tried again and it worked after approximately 7 minutes. Would only rev to about 2500 rpm (safe default limp home mode ?) but once i got going, it was as normal.

Later I phoned the franchised dealer who for £90 they will plug it in to their diagnostics.

I asked if they had any experience of this issue and they said no.

I am reluctant to let them spend time on it with the possibility that they say all is ok (I have had this type of thing before), so wonder whether there is any knowledge given that this engine is in so many VAG models.

Any help, I would be grateful...I'm listening...

thanks.

You can only rev the engine to 2500 on idle on newer VAG TDIs.
To bypass it you need to turn off the ESP.

Without a diagnostic scan it's completely pointless trying to guess.
Sounds electrical to me, so a relay perhaps.

What shape Leon is it, the current model or previous? And assuming that it's just out of warranty?

Hi.
the current model has led lights. The one preceding had xenons. Mine is the pre-facelift version with halogens.
So, update is that the car wolud not start this evening and the green flag call out guy diagnosed faulty relay number 53 which is amongst two others below the steering column, which will have to be replaced. Temporarily a relay 353 is in their with intermittent success.
So good shout on the electrical problem but I will update once it is replaced.
Incidentally, there is a well concealed fuse box at the drivers side end of the dashboard which needs to be accessed - clever !
Many thanks so far, ap
