I've recently fitted a type 9 Ford gearbox to my 1330cc A40 Farina. After a very few miles a very irritating rattle has developed on the over-run - most obviously in fifth and third, but also just audible in fourth as well. The gearbox builder says its the clutch, whilst two knowledgeable friends have strongly implicated the gearbox.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem, and if so what caused it?

Is it the gearlever assembly that is rattling? The after-market rose jointed gearlevers are extremely prone to this, but the standard Ford one can rattle as well if the plastic "saddle" bush that the gear lever engages with is broken or worn.

It doesn't appear to be the gear lever as holding it doesn't change the intensity of the noise. I have got a Quaife short shift being delivered tomorrow so I'll see what difference that makes.
