well, I'm definitely not tipping the OP then...
Depends what sort of establishment it is, if it's one ofbtjese places where you have to go and order your own food and the like then rarely will I tip but if I'm out for proper food I always tip having worked in the industry I can appreciate the money is crap.
My biggest gripe with tipping again having worked as a chef they hardly ever declare it as taxable income.

These days I tip, but in cash.
I like the Japanese "chase you down the street with your change" approach. The French "pourboire" was a nice custom too - not a tip, just 10c per table so they could get a free drink at the end of the day. All changing courtesy of our American friends spreading their absence of culture worldwide.

The wife; having worked as a waitress in her early years, will always tip, regardless.
Me; I tip if the service is good; had a lovely Indian meal in Westminster earlier on in the year and the service was impeccable, both the waitress and front of house manager were very friendly and seemed genuinely interested when we were chatting to them, I left a decent tip.
The miserable girl in Pizza Express was left nothing, the wife did have a whinge at me for not doing so, but even she said she was miserable; why leave a tip then.
What really gets on my tits though; we were at an evening wedding reception last weekend, whilst queueing at the bar a guy behind us in the queue let us know that a 12.5% "discretionary service charge" is automatically added to the bill so ask for it to be removed. 12.5% to pour a f
king massively overpriced drink; 2 JD and Cokes and a glass of Rose' were £26.00 with the "service charge" removed, the cheek.
