Handbrake wont lock

Hi guys the handbrake has decided to not lock on anymore. I pull it up and it locks the rear wheels as it should, but me thinks the ratchet has snapped or sheared or something, as it wont stay on.
Anyone had similar and can it be done from above?
I just want to use the car at the minute,[sunny weather and all] but i am going to change the sump gasket soon, and check the prop, so i will be dropping the exhaust then, so access from below will be a tad easier at this time.
Just want to be prepared beforehand.....will i need a new handbrake mechanism?

Access from the top is easier IMHO, couple of screws at the front, the same at the back and the console will lift off,
you should be able to get the console over the door release without having to take it off, removing the handbrake grip first will make it easier to remove the console fully.

With the console removed access to the handbrake/ratchet mechanism should be obvious and hopefully easy to rectify.

The pivot bolt on my handbrake lever snapped off (where it bolts onto the chassis)

I repaired from above via the access panel on the top of the tunnel.
