Couple of years back I was keeping track of the number of Chimaeras for sale by model and price (purely a combination of boredom and curiosity), but got fed up with it and stopped..
I was just reading a post on the wheelbarrow forum about prices and thought I'd check out the PH classifieds and see what's what
So... I bought my 500 in December 2010 from a TVR specialist dealer in Suffolk for £14995 with 31k on the clock.. Same dealer currently has a 500 for sale priced at £20995 with 48k on the clock..
There are currently 13 500's for sale in the PH classifieds, more than I've seen at any one time before.... 8 are from dealers and 5 are private, and... wait for it... average asking price is £19,739..
For some reason this is making me smile

Hi.
I too have been looking at the 500's for sale at the moment.
I've provisionally sold my 400 to a friend and was originally looking for a Griff. The more i look at the Chimaera though, the more I like the shape of it and a Griff is about £2-5k more for a similar spec.
I digress however. For the prices being asked' should I expect a "perfect" car? Should it need paintwork, have gel cracks, a delamininating screen etc.? Whilst I expect a few niggles at these prices I wouldn't expect anything major, or am I way off the mark?
Your thoughts are welcome!
Regards Chris.

You're not way off the mark, imho, there seems to be some expensive tat out out there. I've been looking for ages and haven't seen anything decent yet.I've put in low bids on cars but only because I firmly believe they are overpriced. I too have been looking at the 500's for sale at the moment.

A Chim at say £18k that has had nothing done to it since new, shocks, bushes, even outriggers, maybe a clutch?, maybe in a 500 a cam?? is going to turn into an expensive car for someone.
Hi guys,
I own a really honest and original 500, with less that 40K mile son the clock, full service history and a few upgrades I have recently called my insurer to change it from the agree value that I had at £14k, agreed from May 2010 when I first insure it and I have put it at “market value” and they suggested £20k… this is a suggestion form the insurance… (so it would appear that in 5 year the value would have gone up by circa £6k…).
So it seems that they are definitely on the up…m, which is great.
I still think that the 500 should recommend a premium, as it is the rarest one and the more potent one, but equally, all good Chimaeras or TVRS as a matter of fact, are too cheap for what they are…
Take a Chimaera 500 from 1996, well the comparison Porsche would be the 911 993, well, in many, many ways the TVR is a much better sports cars (and I am not slagging the 911 off, I am hoping to buy one soon and have it along the Chimaera), well, we all know what has happened to the 993 or the 964….. what. I guess because they are Porches…? IN some ways it makes sense, but other is does not: they are not rare, the TVR are better in many ways (performances)…
So it is good that the good Chimaeras and TVRs in general (there are some pigs out here and also with some really bad modifications (each on their own)) are on the up…
I hope it carries on like this!
In general TVRS are undervalued and not appreciated as much as they should, but things are changing: look at the TVRs form the 60s, a few years ago you could pick them up for good money and they are all passed eth £50k now…(I guess a 911 from the same ear would be £100-£150 k, though…).
I recently read that classic 911s have double in value in the last 4 years… hum, if only this happened to our Trevors…

I agree with Rayvan about his comments. Irrespective of the mileage, a 16 year old car with only six service stamps and no major expenditure will inevitably need money spent on it.
My own '97 400, bought last year with only 47K on the clock has had about 3K spent on it, cam, clutch etc. etc. and still needs a few things doing. Looking at some of the advertised cars mine seems better!
It shouldn't be all about money in my opinion, look at E Types and Healeys,(not that I'd want one mind) way out of reach for us normal folk. The 500 should be the dearest because of its rarity but I'm not sure they are all worth the asking price.
I'll keep looking, and saving!

Go down the route of buying an abandoned 500 non runner, and return it to almost brand new condition, with a new rebuilt 500 engine in her,and the value is backed upMy own '97 400, bought last year with only 47K on the clock has had about 3K spent on it, cam, clutch etc. etc. and still needs a few things doing. I've given up and put mine up for sale after very long rebuild, got a shock when I saw the prices,I've advertised mine for £24450 and believe it's worth every penny, the hours put into these rebuilds is unreal not to mention the £££££.and after all that I've just never going to use it.
For many cars the recent price increases are not applicable, an original car with sketchy history, not very loved will no doubt need many thousands on it to get it to 20 k standard.
Mine might be worth 20K but I've spent that much on it?
I've just agreed 20k value with my insurance company which is good, if I could sell it for 20 k is another matter, probably because I'd want 30 k to part with it.

Got to be honest mate when I saw your car I thought the price was a typo, no offence. That's top top money for any Chim. Good luck with the sale but if you get anyway near that it'll be a miracle.TV8 said:
My insurance is up for renewal next month and they ask max value, not market value, so time to up it from the value of £15k set a couple of years ago.
Gents be warned! My TIV was nearly written off by my insurer as they believed the car value was 14k and the work to respray was quoted at 9k! Their logic was sell to a scrappy and get 6k costing them 1k less after paying me off at 14k!Fortunately I intervened as the scrappy with a big smile was heading to collect car. The re sprayer then reduced his extortionate quote so the repair by the other party could be approved. The damage was a no fault stone chips resulting in need for full respray which I have to say when done was still not as good as before (second lesson - should have insisted on surface and design as cheaper and better). I then got independent valuation done (22.5k as car was again immaculate) and car today sits at guaranteed value of 18k with my insurer. Its is a Grif and it does have 110k on the clock (Triggers Broom).
So urgent message with prices going up......agree a valuation with your insurer ASAP as I can guarantee they will not recognize current market prices other wise and they will wriggle over claims like Barbarella with thrush!

The Mk3 is the rarest version of the Chimaera I guess. No matter whether a 450 or a 500. Anyway, I agree with what you're saying.
I'm looking for a good 450 or 500 and I'm not so sure prices are as high as people think, there are some private cars that are up for above 17k but they don't seem to be selling and I wonder how much dealers are actually getting
I think one of the problems is, you go and look at a high price car, and the full tvr history isn't actually that at all, the screens are milky and when bits seem to have dropped off , you get its a tvr they all do that!!!
If people want the money they have to present the car properly and what people may put up with for 10k they won't for 20k.

Looking at your Chim i'd keep it and finish it off. It looked good to me and the few jobs you have left aren't too massive? Better the devil you know?
Obviously you must be a mentalist if think Chimps look better than Griffs................runs off rapidly!

1996 Ferrari Testarossa 5 Litre. 0-60, 5.6 seconds 0-100 mph 10.9 seconds. Griffith best magazine test. 0-60 5.1 seconds. 0-100 mph 10.4 seconds. The Griffith is a lighter car than the V12 Ferrari. Like all Ferraris they sound like ripping Velcro! Sorry the Ferrari boyos. Prefer the decat Griff 500 V8 throb. Mine Insurance agreed value £20k Testarosss £100k, plus.
This thread does seem to be an interesting one!
I tend to agree with everything that has been said and the prices do seem to be on the up which is good news I suppose. I'm afraid I'm old enough to remember the classic car boom of the late eighties when I used to run Scimitars. I sold a mint (by my standards) "concours winning" GTC for £10750 and shortly afterwards saw it in Classic Car for £16500! Whether it sold for that I don't know but the prices came crashing down afterwards for all classics.
As suggested, some of the dearer cars do seem to take a while to sell, but as with everything, a car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay.
And as for not liking the Griffith Rich, I'm afraid to say I still do. it was the car I promised myself by the time I was 50 but couldn't afford....
Some things don't change!
