Don't know what year car you have, but early diffs can get whiny - change the oil by all means and I hope you're luckier than I was! For simple 'poking about underneath' work that doesn't need great specialist knowledge I take the car down to my local tyre and exhaust place. They should be able to check levels easily enough, but make sure you know what spec oil to replace it with if it needs it.

Have it up on axle stands now, can anyone tell me where the plug is for the diff fluid, and how to get at it??, Is the exhaust going to get in the way??
Many Thanks
Richard

Hi

I have just had a slight clunking noise and whining checked out on my 96 chimera. Found that the oil level in the diff was way too low. The clunking still occurs if I try hard when in a low gear, i.e. 2nd and then let off the power suddenly but the other noise had pretty much gone away.

But to get to the point!!........ I used Tower View Race Services and they were excellent - and the chap did say that I could do this myself but would have to loosen the exhaust to get to the oil plug!

Cheers

Got at the diff drain plug on my '95 Chimaera without disturbing exhaust. From the offside, with the rear wheel removed, and a long extension

Many Thanks to you, have managed to do it without taking wheel off!!!, Complete arse but then what else do you expect, Got some good tips from TMS on the phone, so that was very gratefully accepted!!, Ended up needing a pint of oil!!, oops!, Still makes a faint whine but much better now!!!
On another note bonnet popped up a couple of nights ago whilst hitting 175!!!!!!, private road OBVIOUSLY!, rather scary but fairly amusing at the same time!!, did we get anywhere with the second catch idea!!!, oh and who said that a 4.0 wouldn't hit 155, have got it on video!!! and before you say it, have had the speedo checked and it is correct!!! This might have something to do with the diff starting to whine!! uummmm
cheers

Hmmmm. Do you really mean 175? that's 6,400rpm in top (assuming 27.5mph/1000rpm - Autocar 16/6/93) were you airborne at the time? Autocar managed 158mph (5750rpm) which is scarey enough!

Jeeze, that's bit a quick, I managed 140 on the Duxford runway and I have a 450. I assume you had a good run up though?

Is the diff clonking indicative of oil (or lack of) or something more sinister. Mines always clonked when moving around in 1st at low speeds.

I would appreciate a copy Rich. Could you e-mail it to me? I have a still pic of an XJR speedo showing 170 while we were going round the Nardo High-Speed track in Italy (keeping the camera steady wasn't easy) but this will really impress my Jag mates!
