Anyone have experience of this-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VQOMH28/ref=...

Not looking to spend that much and it seems quite highly regarded for beginner/moderate use.

I'm going abroad in October and sick of having a bit of a belly and B cups (I'm fairly skinny overall but for these blights on my temple) hehe. I've become quite unfit since leaving school 9 years ago, at my worst now for sure and feel like I need to do something about it that I can actually stick to. Just hoping that machine isn't geared too much toward a completely unfit beginner and won't provide enough resistance?

Given that indoor cycling is about as exciting and pleasurable as wiping dog st off your shoe, I'd get one of these: http://amzn.to/1DQyVq5

At least with a recumbent, you can use the bicycle while doing something interesting. And there's more space to hang your washing when you stop using it in 2 weeks' time. biggrin

Also, the one you linked to doesn't talk about magnetic resistance which I think is useful for increasing the difficulty.

I would go with brisk walking every night and a strict low fat/cal diet.

They do another one with that actually-

Not having to leave the house is part of the appeal, I'd be more likely to give up going for a run/walk.

Get that one then, if that's the brand you prefer.

I agree with not having to leave the house, too.

I like to think at least this way, doing it in front of the tv can distract from the monotony.

Definitely. I play on my phone or read a book. They say you're supposed to focus on the exercise but it's a case of playing on my phone while pedalling or playing on my phone while sitting on the couch. I don't have a PhD in Physical Exercise but I would guess that pedalling burns a few more calories than sitting on the couch regardless of what your mind is focused on.

Just remember to clean it before using it on a turbo trainer to avoid getting muddy water spray marks up the wall. biggrin

I wouldn't bother with an indoor bike, seriously you will be bored stless, MTFU and get outside on a real bike

3 x 1 hour sessions a week, incorporate some basic interval training and you will lose weight

Buy a cheap hybrid off Ebay, make sure it fits, some clip in shoes then hit as many hills as possible: NO PAIN NO GAIN
Or buy a rowing machine if you want to stay inside, bit more palatable than a cycling machine and should tone your upper body as well

I'll tell my friend that. He got knocked off his bike last month.

This is like when someone asks for suggestions for a small, economical hatchback and 300bhp/ton comes along and suggests a Pontiac Firebird. biggrin

I have no interest or desire to cycle on the road/outside, dislike cold/wet weather and I don't have a great deal of drive, hence I never considered it. Even if I did want to do that, I'd be far more likely to give up compared to having the option to do it indoors while watching the TV.

As above, buy a used road (or cyclocross) bike and a turbo trainer.

You will have the option of using it outside. Indoor exercise equipment usually just becomes an expensive clothes rack.

I would really recommend that you walk (and maybe run) outside too, preferably off road and on hills.

Why? I bought 1 cross-trainer (eliptical) 2 years ago It's the best thing I have ever done. Covered 1700km on it in that time and use it 5 times a week most weeks. When it's pouring with rain outside, no problem. 40min sessions even in the summer.
