I replaced my old C5 A6 4.2V8 saloon three weeks ago with a B8 A4 Avant 3.0TDi Quattro - so far, one of the best decisions I've made regarding cars.

I love the old A6 (and it's currently at my old man's until I great round to advertising/selling it so I can still drive it if I want to) and its soundtrack, and I miss the ability to just plant my right foot and use all of the revs, but the A4 is just so much more practical, especially for doing 20,000 miles a year in. Loads of boot space, roof bars, towbar, and I can put the seats down and get my bike straight in the back or fit loads of kit in. The A6 is lpg converted so my fuel savings aren't as large as they might have been, but I'm certainly enjoying not having to find a gas station every 200-250 miles.

The torque from the 3.0TDi is amazing as well, I'm finding it a very enjoyable engine so far, and the balance/handling I have no complaints about either, so I think it'll serve me well as a compromise car for a few years until I get another nice petrol car.

Anyone else done a similar swap? Anything in particular I should be looking out for with the new car?

I have come form a V6 petrol C5 estate to a C6 V6 3.0 tdi est you will soon tire of the torque hit and miss the rev free nature of the petrol, quieter, smoother, more sexy V6 throb and realize the fuel saving is marginal.

Having said that TDI is good for what it is compared to other Dervs, but you'll hanker after a petrol pretty soon I suspect - shame they don't sell them anymore at this end of the market.

Big diesel in the A4 is a really nice thing; like an S4 with a dollop of added sensible smile

Certainly enjoying the big diesel so far, not having the revs of a petrol isn't bothering me yet, there's only so fast you can go on the road anyway. Being able to put my bike straight in the back is really useful, and I can get all my army kit in easily as well when necessary. Returned just over 40mpg from the last 3000 miles, so significantly better on fuel than the V8 used to be. Only just got round to advertising the old car last night so hopefully it'll go to an enthusiast who'll enjoy it as much as I did.
