This is one of the latest tricks by the scum .
A small hole is punched below the passenger door handle giving them access to the locking mechanism ,open the car and rifle through personal stuff to get home address ,they might take the odd credit card if they find a wallet or handbag etc ,they also check "home" on the sat nav .
Keep car details with home address and when they visit if the car is not there the chances are the house is empty ,the damage is so minor many do not notice it .
If you find this sort of damage report it to the police immediately .

That used to (in the 90s) be a popular way of breaking into Mk2 Golfs.

You could even buy a kit to cover up the damage, it was so common.

Not sure why you've called it a "latest trick"? Here's an urban myth's site take on it from 2010:

Don't get this. If you walk by a house and note the car on the drive is there for a few nights then surely you have enough information! No need to break in!

OP even used the same photo from the 5 year old Snopes piece to illustrate this "new behaviour".

As with all things they have cycles of fashion , it wasnot in use when I was last in the bodyshop/insurance repair game about 10years ago, they just bent the door frame , unlocked the car and searched the interior and in some cases bent the frame back to shape when they had finished , usually followed by a break-in at the home address some time later .

well these days they just roll up program themselves a key, and drive away
no doubt they check your satnav to find out where you live so they can traumatise your pets and cancel your favourite shows on sky+ while you're out at work.
