Depending on the year, these suffer with timing chain stretch, I believe it was 2006 onwards they revised them, but before that if it hadn't been done, factor in having to do it at some point.

Otherwise great little pocket rockets, I've had two over the years and nice places to be, with a good turn of speed and deep, bass rumble when pressing on.

The original post was only one sentence, how did you manage to not read that it already had a new timing chain? laugh

I like these, would certainly have one over a 2.0t. Shame the post 06 ones are twice the tax of the older ones though

I've got a 2004 DSG, done around 80k. As far as problems go, I had the timing chain stretch/tensioner failure thing which was sorted out of warranty but with a fair amount of goodwill, I had a fan controller fail which meant the fans stayed on all the time and needed the fans replacing to sort and got some rust at the back of the front wheel arches.

Also get occasional random electrical gremlins after startup if the battery is a little run down (it does run down over time) and I have an odd random air-con fault (just stops blowing and only switching off and restarting the engine will cure it?) but not sure if these are common faults or just bad luck?

Otherwise drives very well, no mechanical issues, a deceptively quick car with strong acceleration especially at higher speeds, very stable handling and grip in all conditions and good powerful brakes, averages around 23-25mpg.

I keep meaning to change it but it just does everything I need it do so well and effortlessly that I've kept it longer than I really should have, although thinking of replacing it with an RS3 possibly early next year.

Overall I've enjoyed mine and although it's now quite old I'd still recommend highly. thumbup

Thanks for advice.

Deposit has been paid pick it up next sat. £4695 with 65k miles had new tyres and brakes with clutch and timing chain done last year.

Makes a change from the 1.8 focus i have had for 14 years.

As a matter of interest, what are the symptoms when the timing chain stretches? Anybody?

It'll feel like it's misfiring / running lumpy, you'll also get the EML light come on as the timing goes out.

No, will be GYT, currently on AT.

Looks in good nick, steering wheel is very shiny for the mileage though - I'd guess at heavy town usage. Bargain with new clutch and newgoodyear tyres though

First thing your going to need to do is get rid of that silencer biggrin This is what the Audi has over the equivalent R32 to tone it down a little.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im_ZriILh1k&fe... Here's the result.

Had mine over a year now, not going to be chaining anytime soon. The almost unknown factor is my favorite aspect. Don't leave your trip computer on MPG and you'll never know... hehe

I've had my 3.2 for 3 years now. I did recently get tempted to change it for something faster but instead it'll be getting supercharged to make it a street sleeper. They aren't the quickest cars but are underrated. Sports cats, exhaust and remap will enable a 0-60 of just over 5 secs. A great cruising car as well.

Aha
Mine felt like it was running on only 2 or 3 cylinders. When it happened it was in an instant as if someone had switched 4 cylinders off, at first I thought it was coil pack failure.

Second that, exact same experience when failing! Even though chains are referred to as 'for life' parts, they do have a service interval of 10 years for the tensioner so that's worth remembering.

When the timing chain snapped on my VR6 I was gently accelerating from 20mph in 2nd gear and it felt like the engine simply cut out.

I coasted to a halt and tried to restart the engine (causing more damage in the process) and it sounded rattly with no compression.

After stripping the engine down it turned out the bottom chain that snapped and then whipped round and taken out the top plastic tensioner.

The head needed several new valves, a new tensioner/chain set up, clutch kit, head gasket kit, other gaskets and seals all came to about £800.

OP, since yours has had the chains & tensioners done that's 2 of the most expensive/labour intensive jobs that these cars need done! Tensioners/chains ought to last 80>150k
