Oil consumption LSA And my Gen-F vows
Discussion
Hi,
Ok, maybe I am worrying too much, but is high oil consumption common on LS/A engines when new? Hardly clocked 2k miles. Checked the oil, and it was showing just below the lower notch on the dipstick. Topped up 1L and now it is about half way inbetween the two notches. For a comparison, my mate's LSA took no oil whatsoever in 1k miles assuming that all of them were filled half way. Admittedly, we never checked the oil level when we were collecting the cars when new.
On a side note, I know I have been worrying about slight hints of misfire when cold. Turns out that my mate's car does the same when cold. Also, both cars suffer from a slight rattle from one of the exhaust parts when starting to move from low revs. Same applies to moving at low revs and suddenly flooring it. The car gets a hickup.
Not winging, just sharing. I know I could be going to the dealership to have these rectified (probably just the rattle, assuming that the low load judder is characteristics of the engine). The truth is, I get no time in the week and when taking the car to SO, I would have to part with it for a week. Don't fancy that as it often asks for trouble of junior technicians testing it excessively...
More importantly, performance is not all that and having just had my mate on the phone, who followed Mick in his rocket, I now know I need to address "the issue";)
Also, the exhaust note... Eerrrm, not enough. Been looking at Harrop in Oz. Got a price for shipping at around 700AUD. The qestion is, how do I ensure it will be ok to live with on a longer run? (Drone). Searched youtube vids and all, but they just don't make things justice. I wonder if it would be practical and technically viable to make a pair of backboxes that would feature a valve that would open up the exhaust note from quiet to loud. I probably wouldn't want to be replacing the midsection as that is just about going to guarantee more drone. I don't fancy spending the hefty amount on the Oz exhaust. The duty and VAT just kills the value in my opinion. So yeah, do you thing I am heading in the right direction, or is it a dead end road?

I'd let it settle in for a while. New motors can use a bit of oil. I had a Landcruiser once that was using a litre every two months. It stopped using oil at 60K miles, so I guess it was run in at that point.
Sorry you're having problems with your Gen F. Mine hasn't missed a beat and has over 5k on the clock now.

I have done 4ooo mile in my new GenF GTS and I have had no problems so far the only issue is I too get a rattle from the rear of the exhaust when driving off I think its one of the heat shields vibrating against the plastid under tray under the boot As for power loss and misfire I have had no problems there. I did adjust the over boost valve not sure how much difference it made and the engine so far has used no oil I am a VXR trained technician and I work on GenFs if you are local to me maybe I could take a look at it for you I am in south London if you are not too far
Hi Kevros, whereabouts do you work? I mean which dealer if no secret. I am based in West London (South Ruislip).
I wouldn't say it is down on power. I just got used to it.
I can appreciate and fully understand the oil policy. Just needed reassurance by others
As for the rattle, I think I might be able to resolve it with a loud exhaust
Slight misfire, sounds too much of a coincidence for two cars to do the same. However, we both had the bypass valve adjusted. It resulted in no boost pressure increase. I still shows 59kpa max, and no more, but perhaps I did it wrong.

Sorry to hear you have couple of issues, might be worth getting in touch with Neil and get him to have a look and get it on his lift to check out exhaust or whatever the rattle is, I have a noise from left rear and only makes a noise when on a cobble type roads and no throttle or in neutral sounds odd but can't find anything loose.
I know it sounds silly but have look see if charger belt is on :-)

All in tact around the engine Mick. It doesn't loose power, just gets a hickup as if it were overdozing fuel.
PS. You have been spotted today and apparently had a play with my mate
He said yours is superfast!
Mine sometimes has a little hesitation around 2000rpm if you increase the throttle at a certain rate, I can notice but it is very slight and not all the time, I don't think engines that are tuned are perfect all the way through the rev range, have you tried putting it in performance or track mode see if it is still there?PS. I tried tampering with the bypass valve again. Apart from not being able to force it to read above 59kpa, I think I managed to reduce the hesitation effect.
As part of my R&D I took of the backboxes to see what effect they have on the sound and level of noise, and I think I might actually give it a go and have just them fabricated, and see what happens. I can acquire a full system, but I read somewhere that it would void the warranty (apart from having to get a remap for decat and headers purposes). Not sure if I want to do it as yet...
Paul was chuffed, too. He's just been to see me to report on his journey today

I have looked at my bypass valve and it looks like it has not been touched and as my car is running really well I am reluctant to alter it, have you reversed the non return valve under the engine cover that keeps the exhaust on loud all the time ? takes 30 seconds to do ? I have a little video of Pauls car I will stick the link up, was great to see another one on the road As part of my R&D I took of the backboxes to see what effect they have on the sound and level of noise, and I think I might actually give it a go and have just them fabricated, and see what happens. Yeah, I did the non-return valve, but it's still nothing compared to my old VE.
As for fuel, I generally put standard unleaded. Tried Super BP fuel, but could not tell the difference in either performance, or economy.
PS. Do put the video up. I bet he will love to see it
I only put Shell Nitro in mine, may be worth a try see if it makes a differenceAs for fuel, I generally put standard unleaded. Tried Super BP fuel, but could not tell the difference in either performance, or economy.

Agree with that, it won't be like night & day difference but should feel slightly better
You might need to run a full tank or two of super before you get some improvement. Most supers are 97RON. However as well as Shell V Power Nitro Mega Ultra whatever Tesco Momentum is 99RON and a lot cheaper. I've not had a VXR8 but Accord Type R, Monaro CV8 + Fish-focus pac and now M156 CLS63 love it
