Off the top of my head.....

The futility of existence, deep seated paranoia, a general ennui leading to feelings that their families would be better off without them. Escaping the shackles of a burdensome love which stiffles their true identity. A malaise of the soul based on the cage of social constructs fermented by modern society.

Why do you ask?

Just curious as to why/how people can do that.

Two years ago I changed my identity, but I still let my parents know I was safe and well.

What made you change yours (if its not too personal a question)? - I must admit I have never felt the urge to change my identity (though I'd probably need one first).

I needed to be sure that my ex husband and his family couldn't locate me.

My sister did something similar after her messy divorce - though thankfully given the mental prowess of her ex and his family all she had to do was move town.

If you did change identity, would that not mean that you would lose all your qualifications, employment history (and hence industry experience as far as a new employer was concerned), credit rating, driving licence, passport, etc?

Would you like fries with your next job?

Indeed. However, for a 'knowledge worker' like myself (and, indeed, yourself) surely with a new identity you would have no way of accounting for your knowledge, or proving your knowledge. No case histories, no examples of previous work, nothing.

I take your point about buying a fake identity though.

That must have been a very difficult time for your family, is he now considered deceased in the eyes of the law.

Ah yes, but the old oak table mysteriously disappeared during the Fire of London...

Someone's just done this at my wife's workplace. In this case probably down to his girlfriend running from Sex trafficers.
