Hi guys,

My diff is shredded. From what I understand the ratio on a vxr8 is 3.27. Shopping about it would seem that for the price of the standard one I can get a 3.70. Im not really fussed about loosing top speed but how much would I lose? Plus any other disavantages to having a higher ratio?

Auto is 3.27, manual is 3.7.

There are different gear ratio's as well between the two. Looking at them swapping from a 3.27 to a 3.7 in an auto will drop 2nd gear to 60mph & 3rd to 90mph. Plus put motorway speeds will be at 2.5k-3k rpm in 6th.

Top end of 5th will drop to 165 ish.

I think yours is a manual (?)

Going for the auto diff will throw your speedo out a long way, and change all your ratios.

VMax (theoretical of course) in each gear would increase as per below.

Gear / Current VMax (mph) / VMax with 3.27 (mph)
1st / 46 / 52
2nd / 67 / 76
3rd / 97 / 110
4th / 139 / 157
5th / 167 / 188
6th / 245 / 277

Ya it's a manual. I'd rather acceleration so I'll just get the Same as I have now

I'm sure others have more expertise than I, but Kaaz is also a plated diff, but will be tougher and you can buy 1.5 way or full 2-way.

Wavetrac is a torsen. But slightly cleverer. FoxdieUK has one.

Yep... I need more research frown I really don't know much about diffs... 1.5 or 2.0 means nothing to me frown

1-way locks up under power, remains open under braking.

1.5 - way partially locks up on braking

2-way locks up under both situations.

What would be the benefit of having it locked under braking rather than just freed up?

Drifters love them.

For a road car - I wouldn't personally smile

Just looked up torsen diff and it seems rather smart. Also sounds expensive. Could you suggest a few websites that sell them. Can't seem to find any

I found this site in the past. 5% discount if you are a member of vxronline. Not used him myself. This is just the centre - you need new bearings and seals, plus pinion & ring-gear if yours are shot. Plus someone to build it for you.

I'll have to message foxdieuk and see how much more it was to get all the bearings and all that plus I'll have to inspect my casing make sure it's reusable. What about the kaaz diffs? Are they complete units? I definitely would like to get something better than OEM that can't handle my driving wink

The problem I'm having is that apart from the OEM diff no one sells a complete unit and I don't enough about diffs to be buying everything separate

Ringram has said in the past that you could get a Camaro one (complete & straight swap) that was upgraded from the OEM one.

If you're on facebook you could ask him there.

Correct. You need someone capable to build in a diff centre and set it up properly.

Some places in Oz provide built units with Kaaz / Wavetrac / TruTrac centre diffs - see here as one example. http://www.transgearsdiffs.com.au/diff-specials.ht.... About half way down the page.

Much more expensive than the one linked by Hoff - which appears very good value. Not sure about import charges (?)
