Depreciation: not much if you look after it.

Insurance: relatively cheap as it should qualify for 'classic car' insurance/10 years old etc.

Petrol: up to you, depending on mileage! 4.0's (IMHO) are fine on unleaded. Even my 500 gets unleaded except for special occasions like Duxford - and then it hunted on Super.

Servicing: You can shop around - with the PHers behind you I'm sure you'll get a good deal.

Plus a bit for contingencies. A 4.0 is certainly cheaper to run than a 500.

So all you need is the starting loot and off you go!

Its actually relatively easy to take the whole bonnet off - I did when putting in adjustable throttle arm pedal in mine

Depend what you want to do! Suggest you get the Bible. I don't do much on mine, but I hear that if you can't get at something from the top, you get at it from underneath.

This really depends on your mileage?!

Insurance fixed cost (cheaper with mileage restrictions 3-4-5-6K miles) a garage really helps.

Every additional 6,000 miles double (triple, etc) the service costs, plus a bit for 'extras'

Petrol mid 20's mpg average is reasonably optimistic.

Rear tyres last about 10k miles (average use no track days)£200 - £250 a pair.

Depreciation would be good for this age car, but only if you keep up the servincing /maintenance/cosmetics.

When I had my 4.0 I reckoned on about £1,000 per year for servicing (based upon 2 services / 12K miles per annum) and about £1,000 for fixing it + tyres etc. In the 3 years that I had it it worked out about right.

My 500 was much more, but I did much higher mileage - 19K miles in 15 months.

I had a Griff 500. FSH - Reputable dealer etc.

It cost me £6000 in servicing and repair bills in 9 months.

Not trying to scare you, but advice is get it checked first by a professional.

"Arf, arf, arf.......that's my other dog impression."

Well 30p a mile before depreciation on a 500 covering nearly 16k a year. It must be true because PetrolTed and the back of his fag* packet tell me so.

Even managed a wallet-quaking 24.9 mpg up to Leeds t'other day followed by (approximately) 24.3638905955382301222431728141353 mpg on the way back (I suppose it's downhill)

Ok, I'm going to ruffle a few feathers here, but at the end of the day it's only a tuned Rover V8 that needs a bit more pampering and higher quality oils etc, plus the "extra" TVR only service items/checks.

I'm guessing I'm in the same boat as you Vodkakid, in that I will look to upgrading my S for a Griff in a year or so.

I'm sure these cars are well within the scope of a competent home mechanic, let's not forget that these engines are used in numerous classic cars and where once used in privately owned speed boats back in the US of A before Rover purchased the rights to them.

I'm not saying you could DIY a Griff like you could an MGB, but I do think all this dealer only stuff is probably a bit unnecessary.

I hope so as i stepped up from an S3 and while i am not a mechanic by trade, i think i am more than capable of doing most things and thought the Griffith would of course be different from the S but not a great deal, hey they are classic handbuilt british bulldogs and they need some TLC occasionally.

I know that i am gonna have to take it to be seviced etc but stuff will allways need doing between services and the odd brakedowns.

Vodkakid: EVO did a feature on buying a used Griffith last November - I know 'cos my 4.0 was in it Perhaps you could track down a back issue. Unfortunately I don't have a photocopier handy.

Have the PH crew answered your questions sufficiently to get you looking for one yet?

I think I have this article somewhere about the house too. I'll have a look and drop you a line if I have, then you can send me your snail mail address or fax number if you want a copy.

forget depreciation, if you buy a car 3-4 years plus its minimal compared to a beamer or porker!

about £1500 pa on sevicing and repairs

£500 pa on tyres

insurance can be expensive if you cant limit ya miles!

7k miles per year? that'll be in a mere mortals car!
once in a tiv, you'll be driving for the sake of it...
ALOT ! add another 3k!

the theres track days, airfield days, touring holidays. it all adds up!

get yourself an amex - just for the car!
set up a monthly direct debit to it
pay out when you have to and don't think about it!!

enjoy
