I put a £100 deposit down yesterday on a 2012 plate Tiguan with 30,000 miles on the clock.

I have read lots of horror stories regarding this engine with damaged cylinder liner / cracked pistons with some costing £3000 to repair. I must admit I have been put off slightly by this.

Does anyone have any advice / experiences with this engine in a Tiguan?

Many thanks.

Only seen one and that's on its second engine and its below 30k. The engine is not very good in any model let alone a large vehicle. Maybe walk away now.

You'll probably be ok with a 2012 as they made some improvements to that engine over time. Its mainly the earlier ones prone to catastrophic failure. If you're worried an extended warranty is a good idea

Had one in Sweden for a couple of weeks during the Swedish round of WRC. Was actually behaving myself but utterly staggered how much gas it used.

Thanks for your help guys, I've decided to look for a 2.0 TDI.
