What Porsche for £20.000

Been pondering a change in car recently. Chopping in my B7 RS4 for something a bit different which i'll run alongside a shed/barge/cheap daily.
SWMBO choked on her silver spoon when i mentioned the idea of a MK2 escort in her earshot at the weekend, then swiftly ruled out an E30 BMW after that.
Spent some time on the classifieds and she's now come round to the idea of a used Porsche. I like that idea too.
I would be after something 'pure'... an orignal car with some choice mods but nothing that takes away from the model it is. Not fussed on age, could be 1980s, could be 2000's. However it would be used for a couple of 500mile+ trips a year and some short trips into town as well as some weekend hoons and day trips.
Not LHD.
Not a Cayenne.
Something exciting/respectably fast.
Ideally stable on the depreciation side of things and a maximum purchase cost of £20,000 but would consider something nice at half that, allowing me to go for a nicer daily.
Not knowledgeable on Porsches at all so some inspiration and options would be appreciated, help me narrow my search.

If you want something fun, exciting and respectably fast then I would echo the 951/968 comments with a bias towards the 951 for the excitement and speed the turbo brings to the party. Your budget is very healthy for a well sorted 951, with some change left over as a slush fund.
968's are very nice, but it's just a more grown up and heavier 944. They're very smooth and obviously handle extremely well just like any 9-24,44,68 car does, but I really don't buy the hype around them when compared against a 951. A well sorted and mildly improved is a much more exciting car due to the extra performance, which the chassis is more than capable of taking (lets face it, both the 951 and 968 are all but the same car underneath the body). Find a nice 951 with an LSD on decent suspension and if you like to really drive your cars I'd bet a crisp five pound note that you'll be smitten.
Being honest none of the 4 cylinder motors sound that amazing especially given you've been spoilt by your RS4, however being very 80's in it's boost delivery a 951 with a sports exhaust sounds pretty special to me.
Of course I am a little biased on this debate, but a couple of years ago I found myself in a similar market to you (albeit with a lower, shall we call it 'index linked' budget) and considered 944 S2, 951, 968, 986 S and 996 and it was the 951 that really had me- for a while after the initial purchase 911 fever still had me browsing 996's in the classifieds, but a decent drive of a friends C2 soon saw to that as I was left cold by it- the 951 is a much more engaging and challenging car to drive in my experience. A modern car simply can't compare with that steering feel!
Mine is now mildly tweaked and improved and is used for everything from attending classic shows, to track day and sprints to long road trips away with the mrs. Right now I can't think of another car that I could afford that does everything so well and excites me.
However the main issue is finding a decent one in the first place...
