I work in an SME sized company and we don't do much marketing and what we do isn't as good as it should be. We were discussing this recently and the way we could resolve this, potentially with a part time marketing person. There are obviously pros and cons but as we see it:

Pro: We like having our own marketing person to manage things for us, cheaper than a full timer, reduces time non marketing staff spend with agencies etc, we will have someone who knows our business.

Con: We have to recruit ourselves and make a best guess on one that is good without knowing much. Ideally we would want an experienced/or senior part time marketing person but we're not sure how realistic this would be.

Do any of you do similar? One of my friends works in another SME and they have a marketing person pat time which seems to work (I think).

I had the same problem.

We were always missing deadlines for PR or newsletters to customers. Always rushing stuff last minute.

I've hired someone from PeoplePerHour to work on an ad hoc basis. Currently spending a few hundred a month.

She created a plan (not great but has a structure) and is reminding us on dealines, taken over our social media and helping with sales letters, adverts PR etc.

Have a look on there and see what suits!

I would suggest that you invite local marketing companies to make proposals to represent you on a retainer basis and compare these alongside people you may interview for the part time role.

A good, retained Marketing/ PR company can be more effective than a part time person.

Be aware that the 'larger' agencies tend to be more interested in which media owner give them the best commissions rather than getting 'their client' the best deal.
