From looking at the classifieds the auction is looking to be a corker. Catalogue should go live later this week.

This could be a good buy if it goes for the Estimate!

Coys always set estimates low to attract bidders. But if the market is going off the boil, only the decent stuff will sell.

If this is a low estimate, then I'll be selling soon!

This Auction should be a good indicator of the health of the market.

Inevitably there'll be some crud in there, and some excessive reserves, but also a few nice looking lots that should tempt both enthusiasts and 'investors'.

Is there a 'live' link to the bidding?

Just returned from the auction.

Interesting market barometer with most cars going for 10-20% under estimate. Quite a few not reaching anywhere near reserve.

Good quality cars sold strongly - mostly over the phone to serious collectors - but quite a few examples of relatively poor quality kit mixed in the auction too.

Ironically the 996 turbo cab referred to above sold strongly at £55k plus auction fees on top, it really was in the minority though .

I think the market may be on the turn based on this....

From the few cars I looked at in coys, there seemed to be some really tired looking cars there. Will be interested to see the results.

You'd need to analyse the results to make a judgement. There were quite a few cars in there that would have struggled to sell. Also bear in mind the purchase premiums that need to be added.

I haven't seen the final results, but my view is that, at current price expectations, really good cars will still sell strongly, but anything average won't.

Buyers are getting selective, which is probably a good thing.

That auction taught me one thing for just £5. Don't believe the bullst they write in the catalogue. I had to question if I was looking at the car they were describing!

Indeed, the brochure and the auctioneer did a great job at making everything sound amazing and whipping up excitement to fever pitch levels (which of course you'd expect them to do - it's their job).

The auctioneer was practically salivating about a "hallowed" 964RS all but describing it as the best thing (and investment) since sliced bread - but from what I could see it had had a new rear quarter panel at least and possibly more. It sold for £120k before fees...

So.... £55K turns into £63.4K with fees!

That is a lot!

From an IB member who went:

Guards Red '89 Sport Coupe that at first glance looked good was of particular interest (obviously). On closer inspection there were a lot of things that looked a bit dodgy with it. Went for £28k + 10%

So below guide.

£28k yesterday + BP - £44k today

I gather it wasn't quite as good as it looks?

I don't begrudge anyone trying to make money. If a dealer takes the risk of buying the car, good luck to them.

However, it begs the question:

If this car is being sold for £44k, which doesn't seem unreasonable for one of the last G50 3.2 Carrera Coupes, with modest mileage, nice colour combo, and history - then, why did it sell, for only £33k - under the noses of so many Porsche experts and enthusiasts?
