Hi

My sons lens won't auto focus, but his larger lens will so by process of Illimination it's the lens that's faulty not the camera.

In manual it rotates freely, and have tried blowing air through with no improvement.

What I have noticed is that when the lens is at maximum zoom, and you look into the lens, there is a flat curly thing just hanging, which looks to me that it might be a snapped electrical connection that Previously was connected to the center, and flexed backwards and forwards as the lens zooms in and out.

Could this be the fault?

If so, is it repairable?

Any help is appreciated.

I'm sure it is repairable but when used ones sell for £40-£50 it's almost certainly not worth it.

Is the other lens that he has also an AF-S lens?

It sounds slightly more terminal, but are we talking an AF-S lens - if we are, first rule of diagnostics should always include "clean the connectors" on both the lens mount and body....

Hi

Yes, an AF-S lens

The zoom I have tried that works fine is also auto focus.

The camera will only take pictures in manual focus mode with the faulty lens, so I assume there is feedback from the lens to the body to say there is a problem?

Looks like we need so source a new lens.

I assume the lens worked fine on the body before? It's not a new lens you have purchased and it wont focus on your body?

Shouldn't really matter if its an AF-S lens as they should work on all Nikon DSLRs but there are compatibility issues with older AF lenses that don't have a built in motor and newer entry level bodies that also dont have a built in motor. No motor in either means no worky frown

The 18-55s are so cheap used, you would probably pay more to get it looked at and repaired. Not always the case but most likely.

Have a look at the 18-70 too. Thats a very nice DX lens and will cost about the same.

Hi

Yes, the lens and camera came as a pack about 2 years ago, it started been temprimental about a month ago, but now won't work at all.

Yes, a replacement lens looks to be sub £100, and as mentioned, it might be worth spending a little more and get a wider range on the zoom.

Not into photography, camera is for general use, would a Tamron be a suitable purchase, they do an 18 - 200 at a reasonable cost.

Thanks for help.

Great time to upgrade to a 35mm f1.8 prime. £100 or so second hand.
Alternatively a Nikon 18-70 is a well regarded lens, the bottom rung of the 3rd party lenses aren't a patch on Nikon lenses in my experience.

Hi I went from the 18-55 kit to the 18-140 lens. Much sharper and obviously longer too. Its on the camera nearly all the time now.

Got it from here for £205. Registered on my Nikon account no problem, do the man maths and make the jump smile

Steve, that's a great price, if I'm looking at the same lens on the Jessops site, the link you gave me is half the price, almost too good to be true!

Are all Nikon lens 18-200 with a DX mount the same, or are there different qualities / models? The descriptions on both sites reads the same to a numpty like me!

Thanks for the help!

For clarity it is a 18-140 I linked to rather than the 18-200.

The actual DX mount fit is the same, there are metal mounts and non metal mounts. The 18-140 has a metal mount, it feels very solid and well constructed. The zoom feels really lovely when you use it, no wobble or play, just a tight fit as it should be.

I did lots of reading of reviews and it gets a good write up across the board. Spend a few hours goIng through them, it's well worth it before you spend your money.

In essence this is a lens you can ( and I do) leave on your camera all of the time ( unless you have a specialist need for something). It's versatile for landscape and zooming too. I'm due to try it with portraits next week if the weather is good.
It is Sharp especially in the centre.

Re the price I believe that HDEW supplies grey imports, but as Nikon provide a world guarantee for the lens whether that matters to you is a personal choice. I took the plunge after wondering whether I wanted to pay another £200 at Jessops and deciding I didn't. Fast service from them and like I said the lens registered on my Nikon account no problem.
Hope that helps. smile

Hi

Sorry about the size confusion, I had been reading the write up, and 140mm is like 200mm in old money if that makes sense? I'm not totally into photography, so your help is appreciated.

On holiday in Cornwall at the moment, but thinking I will push the button on it when I get home.

Grey import doesn't put me off, it's for family use, and I'm guessing it probably comes out of the same factory.

Thanks again for the guidance.

It's to do with the size of the sensor. The 'starting point' is 35mm (diagonal). A Nikon DX sensor is 2/3 the size, so if you move a lens from 35mm to DX the outside of the image area is cut off ('cropped'). That's why a 140mm lens on a DX sensor gives the same field of view as a 210mm lens on a 35mm sensor. The multiplication or 'crop' factor is 1.5.

140mm is much longer than the 55mm you had orignally so it seems like a sound step.
