Hi Guys
Is anyone able to help with this problem?
2010 MY
Drivers side fan runs full pelt but nothing from passenger side(these are fans at front of car)
Engine on or just on ignition.
Drivers side fan on all time driving and stays on for 20 mins or so afterwards.
Fan not blocked, turns freely by hand.
air con works normally.
Hope you can help.

regards

Reads like the passenger side radiator fan is dead. It happens. My Turbo's passinger fan motor shaft snapped believe it or not.

Then not too long ago the driver's side fan motor still ran but hardly blew any air and the tech found its current draw was quite high so I had him replace it.

And back some years ago I found my Boxster's passenger fan not running.

There is enough margin the engine coolant temperature will be ok and the A/C will work just fine. When my Turbo fan was not working I noticed this not because of any A/C issues even though the ambient temperature was in the 90's but the difference in fan noise had me out of the car and then I found the passenger side fan not working.

Best get the car to a shop and get the fan sorted. If the other fan goes out the engine can overheat.

During normal driving the cooling fans should switch on when engine temp high enough to need cooling . Around 90c ,and switch off when engine back to normal temp. This can be monitored by differences on engine temp gauge. The fans both should run consistently when AC switched on. Both fans have a low and high speed setting dependant on the load on the systems. The fan not running may be u/s ballast resistor ( very common fault) . Constant running fan ....could be many things ,maybe best have it hooked up to tester. Regards. I .

Hi as Rochster says, both fans will run with the A/C on, if one fails the the otherside will run at max speed, fault is more than likely the motor, which is superceeded to gen 2 versions, or front control unit has been known to burn out.

Thanks for your replies ,but are we talking about the same thing.
You talk about engine temp ,but these radiators are for the air comn and situated at front bumper.
The 987 varies from the 986 in that it is connected via the edu i believe.I could do with a wiring diagram.

The ballast resistor is a common fault on 996s. If you can find out whether they still use them on 987s I would recommend checking that.

The engine radiators and a/c condensers are both at the front on both sides, one in front of the other. They use the same fans for both.

Hi Cavy, yes we are talking about same issue, the radiator fan pulls air through condensor, to cool it down when ever the A/C is on.
If you find somebody with a Porsche diagnostic tester, the faulty fan will be stored in system,

hi cd1957
Thanks for this.
now with the a/c off the drivers fan still runs, does that point to anything,or is it just cooling the engine also .

Easy check...when engine cold at start up ...and AC off ....no fans should be running. They only run on engine demand for cooling ...or when AC switched on . Check for noise and air draft at both frontal intakes. If one fan still running best hooked up to tester as can be a few different faults.

Hi Polome
When i switch ignition on or when i then start engine ,drivers side fan comes on full.
Have booked it in with Indy to hook up to tester.Let you all know the outcome for future reference.

A test should identify the fault...it may be that the ballast resistor has failed and the fan been wired direct to power supply to get it to work. Ie a bodge. Good luck. Ian
