I'm the first to admit that scameras are a bad thing for road safety. I'm much rather have TrafPols out there (marked and undmakred) doing their thing.
I am pretty amazed, however, by people who get caught repeatedly. For example, they might get caught doing 34 in a 30, 47 in a 40 and 59 in a 50.
Possibly all totally safe, but what about their lack of observation? I do wonder sometimes just how sympathetic I am to people who get banned due to totting-up having been caught solely by camera.

I agree with your point about trafpols and I have never agreed with $cameras. I also have never been caught by one and would view this happening as a big lack of judgement on my behalf.
I know where the local ones are and on my favourite roads so I usually keep to the limit there and do what I feel appropriate elsewhere. I think this is what most people do but without the appropriate speed elsewhere bit, just the "go as fast as I can" brigade.

It only takes 4 lapses of concentration over the space of 3 years and there goes your licence. At an average of 10,000 miles per year that means 30,000 miles (i.e. more than the circumference of the earth) in which you have to be constantly watching that your speed doesn't creep past that magic 10% + 2mph limit.
the theory is sound. if you miss a bright orange box on a pole there really is something wrong with you.
HOWEVER, thats completely different to passing a blatant revenue raiser thats hidden behind a sign or being lasered at 500 yards by a scamera van parked behind a bridge.

I think people who travel between many counties have the most difficult time...

Only today, I was in a marked S60 Volvo en route to a collision. I was on a dual carraigeway behind a Lexus that was doing almost 90mph. I had flashing headlights and blue strobes going and was behind the guy for just short of a mile..
Eventually, he looked in his mirrors, braked and swerved in between two HGVs to allow me to pass.
Why do we fret about unmarked cars and hidden cameras with such numpties up for the taking...?

Well I'm glad you're OK Gareth* and I would be except there's a bit of anxiety in the TripleS camp at the moment, my fault though.
I failed to spot a camera van on a bridge over the A1M northbound just south of Wetherby at about 14.15 today and I may have got done. 'Twas an indicated 85 on the clock of a Fiat Punto so I'm hoping a combination of a fairly optimistic speedo plus a decent tolerance zone by the West Yorkshire Scamera people will save the day.
Fingers crossed!
BTW the van appeared to have a couple of devices on small tripods so I don't know whether it would be ANPR or speed checking.

Was the vehicle marked up? Hi-viz?
How far from the back of the van were the cameras and were they on the pavement/verge or on the road behind the van.
Could be ANPR or could be Leica speed cameras...(if it's leica then they generally get a speed from you about 50 metres from them...so pretty crap)

Seeing the camera is not the problem. It's knowing what the limit is.
So you're on a strange road, with 40 limit signs every so often. Suddenly you come across a Gatso. Shit, was that a 30 limit sign you passed 100 yards ago, while you were watching if that doddery old dear was about to step in front of you?
Can't risk one quarter of your licence on it, so you brake to thirty.
Now the guy behind you is up your arse flashing his lights 'cause he knows it's a forty limit.
Turns out your observation was 100% perfect - but you can't be sure what you haven't seen.

But they don't.
Must be a very good reason for it.

Absolutely agree - I`ve posted that myself in the past.
How about these for radical ideas....
Have the centre line / lane indicator different colours dependant on the speed limit.
Or even different coloured cats eyes.
Or a transmitter which can send a signal to the car stereo in order to display the limit?

Hiya Gary, I hope everyone is well.
Sorry about the delay in replying but I was away all day yesterday, little trip to Bristol - PC Buley's patch? Anyhow the answers:
Van didn't seem to be particularly hi-viz, no gaudy stripes that I saw. It was parked on bridge pavement above lane 1 with the near side facing south (I was going north) and I think the tripods were close to the LH rear corner of the van. That's about all I can say.
I've now pretty much resigned myself to getting speed trapped sooner or later, which of course will be my fault, but whatever happens it will make no difference to my safety or the safety of those around me when I'm driving. This is a nonsense system, and it is time it was demolished and replaced by a rational and coherent policy for road safety. Here endeth the current whinge.

I remember posting that before as well. As for your comment on sending a signal to the stereo i'm sorted for that with Tomtom Satnav. It warns you of the Scam 30 seconds, the correct speed 20 seconds and a final Scamera warning 10 seconds before. You get an Audio and Visible warning. Sorted! It does have issues but on the whole it's been good.

Agree totally but you don't even have to have a lapse in concentration to get caught these days, a well placed scam van will get even the most observant of driver(if they're speeding) imo.

Especially as they try to do this, they hide on purpose simply to increate their yield. It's a financial thing, when you're running your business you want productivity to be as high as possible, yield from a particualr job to be a high as possible.
