I've been collecting parts for a clutch change and the car is due to have it fitted in the next couple of weeks. The biting point has been getting high and with all the talk about spigot bearings I decided just to get the whole lot done and fit a Ripshifter at the same time.

I got the car out of the garage today to take the door card off and try to fix the all too common leak into the rear footwell. Hopefully I've fixed that....

Unfortunately the car has started to make a metallic rattle/grinding noise from the gearbox/clutch area and there is a little bit of vibration from the gear stick. It's fine when it's in gear and the box still shifts fine.

The garage where the work is going to be done is about 30 miles away. I'm wondering if it is worth chancing it or getting it trailered.

Does this sound like the spigot bearing is going, or clutch issues?

Is it the same noise with clutch depressed or released , could be a clutch release bearing if it goes away when you push the clutch down , if box is doing what it's supposed to do eg changing gear , and you know clutch is going then hopefully it is just the clutch failing earlier than what you expected , if it was me I would drive car there gently as it's not far away but that's just what I would do lol

The noise is only with the clutch depressed. It goes away when the car is in gear or in neutral. I'd be interested to hear from someone that has had the spigot bearing fail and if it had similar symptoms.

My understanding , clutch pushed down then the gearbox does not rotate at all , I would expect spigot to grind rather than rattle , it's difficult to say , if you say shifting is ok and not effected I'm assuming the box is not the issue , spigot tends to fail due to too much gearbox shaft play , I've never had a spigot go, I'm thinking if you have a worn clutch it's that causing noise , I think reality only way to know is to have it taken off and questions will get answered as a number of things could cause same problem

High chance it's spigot.

Think about it. Clutch down, flywheel spinning, gearbox shaft stopped. Therefore spigot bearing in flywheel is spinning around stationary shaft. Ouch
Trailer it.

Hi Ade , clutch and spigot done in the Monaro at around 57,000 miles , spigot was fine , and on the Vy ute it was slightly higher mileage , there was more input shaft play on the ute , but again spigot from memory was fine but changed

Get it recovered for the sake of a few quid having it taken there it's not worth risking damage to the input shaft

Yeah I'm with Neil on this

Yeah personally I would get it trailered
Rather pay for that then have to pay for a complete rebuild of box

Definitely this, I had mine trailered to Neil's when he did mine
It's not worth the risk IMO

Thanks for that Chris, mine done 52,000 so it should be OK for a few more miles. Just changed radiator on mine this week, it split on drivers side plastic end section of radiator. fitted a Mishimoto from Monkfish.

The car is on 77k miles so I guess its due. I'll have to make some phone calls tomorrow and try to find someone that can trailer it.

Just to expand on this thread a little, how much is a spigot bearing and where can they be bought from?

Bit of an update - I had the car trailered to the garage in the end.

I've just spoken to them and it turns out that the spigot bearing was breaking up. Hopefully I've caught it just in time, everything else seems OK.

Even if you depress a clutch there is still probably some drag which causes the input shaft to turn slowly - that's why after coming to a stop and selecting reverse on many cars it's better to select second (for example) gear without raising the pedal and then go for reverse - it avoids that crunch...
