Don't think any DSLRs use SD cards. However you could flog your SD cards on ebay and use the dosh to buy CF cards!

I would buy an 18-70 D70 kit with a good flash or another lens myself... and a tripod, decent bag, some filters, big CF card, etc

If you spend all the money on just the camera, you'll need to fork out tons more for the other kit later...

SD cards belong to work so would not be selling them, I do have CF at the mo so not really a prob.

I have always had Olympus SLR 35mm cameras when I did A level photography

So I think the choices are Olympus, Canon or Nikon

Have not looked at the makret at all so don't know whats Old,New or worth waiting for.

Cheers
Grant

You might also consider the Fuji S2 as an outside runner?

Yes I know the S3 is now out - but that's likely to be significantly over budget.

I've just ordered myself a Canon 20D with a 18-55mm lens for £995, can't wait to get my hands on it.

Just got the camera and lens, no cashback or free C/F card. Got it from 7 day shop. Did try to get it from Jessops, but nowhere had it in stock.

Gottit!

D70 with 18-70mm AF-S lens, and enough money left over to get another decent lens or Speedlight.

For £1000 you'd be best off with a Nikon D70 with an 18-70, loads of memory cards and a decent piece of software like Photoshop Elements to handle the images.

A no brainer really. You really won't regret it. Its all the camera 99% of people need, and with the software and lots of memory you be set for ages.

You'll even have change ! This will come in handy for printing costs.

Do think the D70 is the way forward after looking at a few sites, (always promised myself a Nikon)
and I can start build up a collection of lenses for the future, do they change the bayonet often or do all nikon lenses fit. (Sorry if I sound stupid)).

How long has it been out and will it be replaced soon.
Where the best place to buy and did someone mention cashback?

All Nikons have the same mount - theyre very proud of that!

re D100 - I read that the D70 was superior to the D100?

I agree with getting a D70 with 18-70mm lens though - top kit.

the only dslr i know that uses SD cards is the new Pentax *ist DS ( www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUCT=PENISTDS&BRAND=&CONTINUE=false&FEATS=&FIRSTPRICE=&KEYWORD=&LEVEL=&MODELNUMBER=&NEWQUERY=True&NODE=481&ORD=ASC&ORDERBY=&QUANTITY=10&RECENT=0&REFINE=&SEARCH_FOR=&SEARCHNODE=0&SEARCHURL=dointellisearch.cfm&SECONDPRICE=&SHOWCASEID=&STARTROW=1&SUBS=&WORD_SEARCH=N& ). the review on steves-digicams.com seemed very favourable about it too.

Im currently saving up for a dslr. the three im considering are - Nikon D70, Canon EOS 300D, and the Pentax mentioned above. although at the moment the D70 seems to be the best of the bunch.

there are some really good deals to be had at the moment - www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.productBrowse&id=437&topcatid=19

The Canon 1D II and 1Ds II use SD cards as well as CF.

Nikon D70 if you really want it now. There is new model coming out soon from Canon to replace 300D.

Either called 350D or Digital Rebel XT which use same feature from 20D at $999 which is about £550 from this March coming.

Have to agree really, and I've got a Canon D20! (Unless you're in the Rothchilds family and simply must have the best then no.) The Nikon D70 is (IMHO) placed inbetween the Canon 300D and Canon D20 in the marketplace.
If you can afford the Nikon and want it then go for it.
If you want to save a bit of dosh for more (or better) lenses then grab the 300D.
As topstuff says, they're all the camara you're ever likely to need (I didn't say want!)and by the time you want to upgrade you won't have to ask which camera to get, you'll know.
Enjoy!

Martin.

PS - Photoshop Elements 2 comes with the D20 body.

Mine only issue is the D20 is 8 million and Nikon is 6.1

Will this make a huge difference to the qualitiy or does it only come into its own if you want to print full size images, Which I don't.

On this thread there's a link to a site of photos taken with a D30 at 3.1MP which were all fantastic.

You've answered your own question in that it probably only matters when printing above A3 size.

Are the extra pixels worth more than having money left to buy other kit? Or is money not too much of an issue, and you can get the other kit anyway?

Neither, the difference isn't actually significant in practical terms.

Ken Rockwell is generally pro-Nikon but this article is brand-neutral: www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
