Amazing track day tyre price.....Dunlop SS Race
Discussion
Chaps,
I had to share this. I rang Dunlop to ask some questions about their Supersport Race tyre which my RS came fitted with. They have just one fella who sells them now, his name is Dan at "Mr Tyre Motorsport" in Birmingham, tel 0121 3596625.
They haven't given me an exact price, but as a guide an 18" SSR tyre is £107 plus VAT. It is only £3 carriage per tyre. I thought this was very cheap compared to the likes of Michelin Cups.
The SSR is a second or so slower over a lap than the Cup (I read an article somewhere that compared them) but they have a tread pattern that looks as though it will shift a little water.....well, more than a Cup would anyway. As I have to drive to the track on the same tyres as I do the track day on, I think this is a good idea. Dunlop told me today that the tyres are basically a half-way house between a road tyre and something like a Dunlop Formula R. Sounds ideal to me.....and for 107 quid plus VAT!

Well done and thanx for sharing the info.

No probs Mel.
I have just ordered a set. Dan mentioned that Kieran had already bought some for his GT3.
He can't get any 225/40-18 fronts for 4-5 weeks, so I have gone for 235/40-18s....maybe better turn in? Or perhaps sluggish steering? Hopefully I won't notice a difference. They are only 6mm wider anyway. I had no bother getting the 265/35-18 rears.
I hope you guys order loads, cos I might get a free set!

Top job!
Are these prices permanent, or a "special offer"?
Sean - what sizes did you get? As I understand, the SSR's don't come in the right size for the Mk.2/RS.
Dan (see phone number below) said that the price for the SSR tyre will stay low for the year in all liklihood.
I can see me staying with SSRs because they are a good comprimise road/track tyre and as such I hope the price stays fairly low.
Dan said that Dunlop may move the moulds for making these tyres to the UK which might help keep prices low.
Thanks for this - i have recently been recommended these tyres for my RS but was quoted £160 each for the fronts & £210 for the rears!
As a matter of interest, the rears are slightly smaller than the standard RS tyre & only available as 285/30zr18 - or so im told - but are fine for the car.
Cheers
Paul

Are these only 18s ?? Sounds like a hell of a deal, I quite fancy some for my 993 (on 17 inch wheels).
Anyone got a pic of the tread pattern? I have used track-oriented tyres on the road before (Yoko A048Rs on a souped up trackday 205) and they were OK in standing water - that's my only real concern as I'd be using them throughout the summer (got winters on now).
6 mm tread depth isn't that much though: anyone know likely tyre life assuming weekend road use and a few track days?

I think your plan would depend on how many track days you were planning on doing. If it was only a few, I would stick with road tyres.
Polar993 and I were out in the hills driving our cars last weekend. He has a 993 C2 on road rubber, my 993 RS has Dunlop SSRs with a fairly stiff set up. I did not feel confident giving my car full beans in the cold damp weather. He was enjoying himself more in the 993 C2 on "standard" road tyres.
I reckon that in order for these track tyres to work properly, you need a track biased set-up. They rely on keeping the contact patch of the tyre flat to the ground. This needs stiff suspension and negative camber (for the bends obviously), especially at the front. I think that if you put sticky track tyres on a road car with a factory set-up, you wouldn't be making the most of the tyre. You would probably be better of with Contisport Contacts or SO2s etc.

I've got winter tyres on mine for the winter / early spring months (bought them for a Swiss ski trip, now convinced they are ideal in the UK cold / greasy conditions!) so would be looking at putting new rubber on around April time. I wouldn't expect SSRs to work with external temps below 10˚C !!

Then again, I'm currently running standard suspension and am *desperately* resisting changing the external appearance (RS spoilers / splitter, ride height etc.), though I'd absolutely love a real RS, or in fantasy land, a GT2. Your car is bloody gorgeous! Don't want to turn mine into a wannabe.
However I will almost certainly get the suspension looked at next service (spring) since the current dampers are a touch tired. I was interested as if the quoted prices are for 18 inch tyres, then the 17s may be cheaper - and the prices of the 18s are cheaper than a set of 'road' Contis for my car. At that price I thought it'd be worth a punt anyway!
Any recommendations re: suspension upgrades for my 993? Mine's got a little more torque than standard, I fancy tying it down some more...
