Just reinstalled Win 2K Pro on an old IBM ThinkPad and none of the OEM drivers copied themselves from the image CD I got with the PC .

So I’ve had to use device manager to find all devices not working and download the drivers off the internet using a combination of Windows Update and the IBM support page. Problem is there’s one left and it just says unknown device so I can’t use Windows Update and I can’t download the appropriate driver from IBM if I don’t know what it is!

The only information device manager gives me is as follows:

Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller

The status is: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).

I should add that no peripherals are connected to the PC but it is plugged into a network router. However, internet is working fine so it’s not a network related device. All the obvious devices seem to be working fine: video, audio, display, network adapter, modem, keyboard, pointing device all have the correct OEM drivers installed now.

So how do I find out what the hell this device is?

If you go to IBM.com and type in the product code thats on the little black sticker underneath the laptop it will give you a list of all the drivers you need.

Dont rely on MS to tell you what you need.

Its probably something silly like the access thinkpad driver...
