We were lucky enough to have moved into an old country manor house a year ago but I'm struggling to get building and content insurance.
Does anyone know of any specialist firm or broker that deals with these types of properties?
There seem to be a few sticking points.
- The house has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. All the on-line insurance places seem to refuse to quote for any house with 6 or more bathrooms
- The mortgage company insist on building insurance >£1m and a lot of places seem to only insure up to £1m.

I'm currently with John Lewis insurance. They have offered a renewal but its gone up quite a lot.

(The house is not listed).

You might want to try Chubb, or Sterling. Much over £1m rebuild and you enter high net worth policies, at which point you want to make sure you are properly covered. Afraid with an expensive house comes expensive insurance....

I struggled to find any insurer or broker who could help when I needed non-standard house insurance. They all seemed to want simple, mainstream requirements, anything off script got a 'too hard, computer says no' response.

After lots of phone calls I found and used Highworth, a smaller specialist broker who were really creative at finding a solution. I used them for a number of years and only stopped using them when the house was sold and the specialist insurance was no longer required.

No link to company, just a satisfied customer smile

As above, would suggest sterling, my house is a 6 bed listed building but they covered it without issue on a high net worth policy as mentioned before.

Second year with them, I did it via quote line direct on the telephone, pointless trying to do online if you have a large/oddball house.

Happy hunting.

Try Hiscox. We have a custom policy in place with them and they tailored to suit our specific requirements , which I believe is their speciality

NFU will probably do it, they're great to deal with too.

Good chap to deal with and won't get a "computer says no" response.

Update so far
- Hiscox will not cover (house too big)
- Sterling use John Lewis (who I am already with).

I think you are making an error in going directly to an insurer, you need to use a broker. Insurance has become highly commoditised now but anything which falls outside of the mass market will get a 'computer says no' answer.

I suggest you speak with the Private clients' team at Pavey Group in Torquay. Chris Bird, 01803 652 244.
