I've recently had my 2014 TT Tdi Quattro serviced. The front tyres are down to 2mm tread and the rears about 5mm.

The Audi dealer stated that all 4 tyres would need replacing at the same time as there would be more than 2mm difference front to back. I can't find any reference to this in the owners manual though.

Has anyone else come across this, or is the dealer mistaken?

I'm pretty sure this doesnt affect Haldex cars like the TT & A3, only permanent 4wd cars with Torsen diff's like the A4/5/6/7/8 etc etc.

I'm not sure the guideline is 2mm max difference anyway.

Still, new tyres are not going to give a bigger difference than you already have, quite probably less.

I normally take the cautious approach, but this I would not worry about. A greater difference yes.

I doubt there is much of a percentage of quattros on the road with less than 2mm different front to rear as they don't wear evenly.

Thanks for the replies, it makes sense with uneven wear front to back.

After a few years of BMW/Jag/Volvo servicing I was pretty unimpressed with the local dealers efforts anyway, but I'll give them a ring and feedback my concerns about the mistaken info. Two unnecessary 19" tyres is a substantial extra cost!

I'd only ever heard this in regards to an axle, not front and rear. My soon to be replaced A5 quattro needs the rear tyres replacing - very close to limit, fronts are 3k miles old, close to new. Not an issue the dealership raised.

Spoke to the dealer today. Initially service manager said it was an Audi recommendation, then that the recommendation was 3 mm not 2 mm. I'll email Audi tomorrow and see if they reply. In the meantime 2 new fronts going on tomorrow at £40 a tyre cheaper than the local dealer...

Change them 2 at a time and when they hit the wear indicators or whatever the legal limit is. Have probably changed tyres a dozen times over the last 13 years or so on TTs and never had a problem.
