Please can anyone give me some advice on the best way to remove the air filter in a 98 griff 500.

Is it in the book? If it is I can't seem to find it.

Also I assume it can be cleaned? Or do you just replace? If it can be cleaned any advice on that too would be great!

Thanks

Rob

This should help http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... If it's the original, they can be cleaned and re-oiled but, because it's a PITA to get it out, you might find it's so caked in filth that you have to get a replacement.

I swear I must have bigger fans or something. The air box gets stuck on them.

I will try again tonight.

If I have to remove the fans is that a big job?

First time doing it, It always seems impossible to get the air box out. Just persevere and it'll come out.

I don't understand how the fans get in the way? I don't recall that, when I did mine, the air box came near the fans on its way out.

There should be a bolt at the offside end nearest the alternator holding the cowl down. There isn't much room in there and by the time you've jiggled it out your back will be shot. Swapped both ours for K&Ns as they don't need much maintenance.

I give up ! I swear the mechanic that made this car must have built it in a different order!

The photos below show where it gets stuck!

I have had my head upside down so long I am starting to feel like a bat!

I now know why this filter probably hasn't been changed in a very long time.

As I was able to get my air box out ok, I pose this as a question rather than a suggestion - could you replace the filter without taking the air box out?

Yes that's what I am thinking. When the new filter arrives I will try it.

The end of the airbox (offside) fits under a lip so if you try and lift the box without sliding it towards the passenger side you may break the lip off.

Thanks for all the help.

Managed to squeeze a new filter in, all looks good now.

Really don't want to do that again in a hurry.

Tvr must have only employed people with little hands!

Unfortunately you will. The standard filter is pretty crap and almost needs replacing from day 2.
K&N is the way to go.
