I have an issue with my MMI as it is mostly off and then fires up occasionally, speakers pop up out of the dash then it goes off again. I've tried the force reset but it doesn't work and also disconnected the battery for an hour, but same result.

My question is, is there something else I should try and second, is this a fault a mobile car electircs bloke could fix rather than taking to Audi or other authorised worker?

Thanks!

Problem is most likely a failed device in the MOST bus. The MMI consists of a lot of modules daisy chained together using a Fibre Optic MOST data bus. If any component on the bus fails or the fibre optics themselves become damaged then the whole system goes down and will not start.

If you can find someone with or own VCDS you can perform a number of diagnostic checks on the MMI MOST system which should reveal where the fault it.

The MMI is quiet specialised, and even when Audi started using it 12 years ago it was ahead of its game. Even if an electrician could identify the failed component, the whole system uses component protection so you cannot just swap out the failed part. Every part of the MMI except the TV tuner is paired to the car, so a dealer visit is needed to remove component protection on the swapped out part.

Tom, I have VCDS and live in west Kent. Drop me a message if you want to come round and plug the car in.

Thanks Gents,

Joe that would be ideal if you don't mind. I'll drop you a line with my details.

Look closely for evidence of water ingress in the boot; there's usually foam insulation low down behind the trims - moisture here is bad news.

Water ingress was an issue when I got the car since been stopped, so three years dry now. Amazing, I had none of these problems when I had my TVRs.
