whats this? and other stupid questions
Discussion
hi all,
just had a wander around the car and i have several boring questions that im hoping you can help with. ive done several searches on each, but im not getting a definitive answer, cos lets face it, im getting dumber by the second. apologies in advance gang, and many thanks for your time.
so then, whats this and shouldnt there be a pipe attached to it. its on the front of the engine near the fuel rail. ideas?

apologies if thats not the right way to do it (see above disclaimer)
second, wheres the dipstick? (apart from the one typing this obviously) i wanna do an oil change so that i know im topping up matching oil, as my dealer can only tell me its mobil 1, not which flavour/ blend/ type./ delete as applicable. ive got a 2001 speed 6, which ill be using every day. will mobil 15w50 be okay? additionally, how much oil to fill it? and wheres the best place to get replacement filters and the appropriate crush type washer?
erm, feel dumb typing this... but wheres the windscreen washer bottle? my manual shows only the placement for cars i dont have (note to MR Wheeler: why not go the whole hog and put other other brands in there too?).
also, am i okay to fit some uprated headlight bulbs from half-wit halfords ( are they h4's?). i will be getting the uprated wiring thingy from the chap you all recommend, but in the meantime, is it ok to use some of these without risk of fire/ death/ explosion/ sobbing?
thanks again gang, i will try and learn quicker, i swear.

Dunno what the valve is, I have an AJP.
15W50 sounds good to me, try the carlube stuff that TVR use, cheaper than Mobil.
H4's are the bulbs. Try to get 100/80W and make sure that your reflectors on the front are clean, makes a big difference.
Dipstick, dunno under the bonnet somewhere!
Sorry I wasnt much help!

I just love your posts....
Edited to add...without being funny..have you tried searching on the Tuscan forum...as this will be mainly an AJP bank of info.

If you have a Speed Six engine then I think it's dry sumped. It is in the T350/Tamora/Tuscan anyway. If so, there is no dipstick in the way you're thinking. There should be an ally tank with a metal screw cap which should have the dipstick attached to it when you remove it. Do a search on the Tuscan/T350 forums on how to check the oil if my guess is right.
As for the image - looks like some kind of vacuum device to me. I'll take a look at my Speed Six later and see if I can see such a thing.
Where did you get the car from? Did the dealer not give you any instruction? If not, do you know how to run the car when the engine is cold to help ensure longetivity? If not do a search on the other TVR forums again for phrases like 'oil temp' and 'when cold'.

thanks targamara, thats very helpful. i have indeed got an ally header tank at the front, so i reckon the dip is in there.
and i got it from a dealer, but the chap that they despatched to deliver was about a squillion years old and genuinley, and im not making this up, said "i dont know where the oil would go, do modern cars use oil?". you can see why id want to ask you guys carncha?
id appreciate any clues on the vacuum thingy. it looks like the thingy that was on top of my subaru impreza (insert mocking here) and im fairly sure that was attached/ piped into the turbo. or was it the airbox? i forget, i was young and impetuous then, you know how it is.. crazy, care-free days, warm summers evenings, wildebeast sweeping majestically across the plains...
thanks again gang,

Great posts Matt, keep them coming and we'll all do what we can to help.
On the V8's the windscreen washer is right in the middle of the font half of the engine bay - between the engine and the radiators. Conveniently placed so you either fall over trying to reach it, or pour water everywhere!
Oil - everyone has their favourite. I use scary motorsport stuff, but only because my Indie gets it by the drum, and it's thus less than half the cost of a litre of Mobil one from Halfrauds.
As for the lights, erm.... they're unlikely to be any good without resorting to a Xenon conversion (£1k+). However certainly with better bulbs and clean reflectors you can make them adequate. The Mod-Wise wiring kit is worth a try, but you are trying to fix something that is pretty well broken by design. I'd be tempted to do what I'm doing - save for the Xenons! (And the Nitrons. And some new Tyres. And Pearls for the wife to keep her quiet!)

hey thanks red, pleased to know im making someone laugh other than me (sad admission no 1: i laugh at my own jokes) (sad admission no 2: more than anyone else). and thanks for all being so welcoming.
as far as the mod wise kit goes, the chaps number seems to have been disconnected (dodgy wiring im guessing) so i havent managed to get hold of him. looks like its off to the garage with some glitter glue and silly string then....

this is what it is on real engines other thread
I assume it's the same on yours.
My washer bottle is under the cover in front of the engine, have a look there.

certainly sounds like the thingy i have, so to speak. except id say mines on the front of the engine. when i say front i mean the end closest to the front of the car. soo.. do you mean, in my terms, albeit probly the wrong ones, that the washer bottle is under the cover at the back of the engine?
hmm.. im not sure if even i followed that..
thanks again

The vacuum thingy is on the front of your fuel rail (as far as I can tell). Between the engine and the hinge for the bonnet is a plastic cover (on AJP), my washer bottle is under there. If you don't have a cover there then I have no idea. Email ocean1, he's the local fighter of wrongs as far as the speed6 is concerned.
Don't worry, it all becomes clear eventually.

theres an ocean one? no wonder i didnt understand oceans eleven...
thanks matey, nice use of 'thingy' by the way, good to see im educating the masses with my technical know-howery. every days a school day
thanks again, you lot are great. its almost worth driving a car that sounds like someones throwing spanners around under the bonnet for. almost.

The picture shows a vacuum/pressure diaphram cannister. Since it's near the fuel rail it's almost certainly the fuel pressure regulator. If it is connected to the fuel line then that would confirm it.
Fuel pressure regulators like this normally have a spigot which can be connected to the manifold to reduce the fuel pressure under part throttle. Since the spigot is quite dirty it's clearly been disconnected for some time which supports the theory that it isn't supposed to be connected to anything. If it isn't connected, the fuel system will run at constant pressure. I remember hearing that it *is* designed to run at constant pressure, but I don't remember who said. So it's probably correct as it is, but don't quote me.

hey thanks mate. thats great.
just been reading about the horrors of doing an oil change on this thing, what fun. im gonna use mobil motorsport 15w50, that sound ok to most?
also, anyone know what the filter code is?
also, is it true that its near impossible to get all the oil out such that you end up forming an amalgam of old and new oil of differing types. i cant help feeling that cant be good. there must be a better way (other than buying back my old car) suggestions, anyone?
so many questions, so little charm/ money/ personal cleanliness. sorry gang

ok, just had a wade through all the service bills, and the oil was changed 900 miles ago for mobil 1 0w40 (the one that you all pan)(no pun intended).
so, whaddya reckon? should i stick with this for the next 5000 miles (even though y'all say its too puny to protect at all) or should i do an oil change over too summat like 15w 50 to improve the chances of a longer life?
please forgive me double posting. just wanna getb a bottle of the right stuff and keep it in the wagon.
dont i go on?

doesnt everyone around here think that its too runny and thin? after reading around today the general theory seems to be go for summat thicker.. a bit like me
the problem with having access to so many opinions is that often you get equal numbers of for and against's and it makes knowing what to do tuff.. know what i mean?
have decided to buy another cerb and run one on 0w40 and one on 15w50. its the only way to be sure.

nervous - I hear lots of opinions about one versus the other and have asked the opinion of my dealer and the indy I use. I have not been convinced to change from 0w40 which is what the car came with when I bought it new. Considering your SP6 is the same vintage as mine I would guess 0w40 would be the recommended oil too?
It would be interesting to know what weight the factory are recommending now. I know they've changed brand.

The argument my indie gave was tht being slightly thinner was better for a daily driver - if it's parked outside (like mine is) and run in all weathers including freezing conditions, it warms up a bit quicker. Plus the synthetic motorsports stuff holds its qualities virtually no matter the engine temp etc.
For the same reason I went for 5.1 brake fluid and braided hoses - higher boiling point on the fluid (I've seen too many Cerbs boil their brakes and end up in the kitty litter at tracks!)
