A large group of engineering companies have recently closed. The operation has been moved to China. Lests just say the products were big, heavy and of very high quality. The reason they closed and put hundreds of people out of work is because the environmental tax was the last straw and tipped them over the edge into insolvency.

The operation was mostly clean and certainly within legal limits although they did have a foundary.

What I cant understand is why this company had to pay environmental tax when it mostly exported its products. Whereas the major supermarket chains guzzle oil reserves at an alarming rate shipping goods up and down the country as many as 5 times and produce huge quantities of packaging as waste both instore and in the home. Yet these mega profit makers pay no environmetnal taxes because they do not manufacture?

Anyway seems ludicrous to me

Most puzzling is why the tax exists. But there again todays politicians seem more concerned with maintaining their own Gravy train than actually running a real governmnet.

Why do you need to understand this tax?

Just cough up and be happy, same as with all the other pointless taxes we have to endure!

Perhaps because it cost a couiple of hundred people their jobs? There again it might just cause them to think about who they vote for next time?

Of course China will now produce these goods in the same way(actualy probably less green due to less restrictions)

So overall this tax has not helped keep the plannet clean all it has done is lost some jobs in the UK and created some in another country. I do believe these lentilists actualy hate this country and are trying to FCUK it up in any way possible.

Fantastic keep it up .

That's how I would sum it up, i.e. lose jobs here, move work to a country with no environmental cares whatsoever. Nice one.

And lower wages and all the other things that reduce overheads, like less concern for health and safety issues.

My guess is the work would have gone there anyway - Mr. Brown's outsourcing plan.

Now we earn most of our money from the 'City' it seems. So all we need do is sell that to the people from Frankfurt and is will leave us free to start over again!

It very existence justifies the climate change scare.

In fact, it's the only justification for the climate change scare.

I've always thought that the same thing would be about to happen to the animal testing industry.

After all, why put up with domestic terrorists (animal rights fanatics) when I'm sure the chinese would love to get their hands on skilled jobs like that. I don't see the chinese government allowing so called "peacefull" demonstrations within a 10 mile radius of an animal testing facility.
