survey to the general public... if you will :

when was the last time you met someone/some people that you get on with, and now consider friends (i.e. you go round to ther houses/they come to yours) ??

condition - they must not be people you met from work, or friends of friends.

just interested in the state of society today.. I have a theory, and want to know if it's correct....

let us know if you can....

No sorry, can't remember anyone who was not met through business or friend of friend recently. All my mates have stemmed from work or used to go to school with them, more likely to meet girlfriends as a result of just chatting to people... not blokes, its a bit weird if a bloke starts randomly chatting to strange blokes.

IMO of course.

fair few people from here, but the last time I met truly new people was in 2001 when I started Uni.

Since then I've met a fair few people whom I'd class as friends from here mind.

Found out recently that I'm now considered friends of the Boston (Lincs, not the cold one in the US) elite!

Was doing nothing in particular on my boat when an oily-overall clad gent struck up conversation. "You're Ken's mate then?" (Ken being ex Mayor of Boston and head of the fishermen's assoc'n).

"Yes" says I, "Do you know him?"

"Oh, I look after his engines......"

Could almost feel him doff his cap respectfully.

So, yes, I made friends (including Ken) last year through buying a floating shed.

Edited to add that he fits the "at least once a fortnight" stipulation. Was talking to him yesterday about bits falling off boats!
There's Malc from Lincoln (another boater) who does marathon length phone calls to me at least once a week!

interesting stuff so far...

maybe I should re-categorize "friend" as people/person you see at least once a fortnight..

and add info about where/how you met any that aren't from work/school/uni/friends-of-friends...

great so far.. keep 'em coming!

Made a load of new friends when I came to uni, keep in touch with lots of people from school, know a load of people in the city through OH so I can't remember. Which sounds terrible!

If you include people I get friendly with through horse events...Same people tend to be on the circuit through the summer.

I've 'met' a few people on here who I'd like to get to know in person, but I haven't got round to it yet.

At university it seems to be easier than before to make friends. Funny thing is, in the first year, you're sort of forced into having to make friends, then you'll find once you get to know them over time that half of them are complete barstewards. In the first year it seemed possible to just walk into any bar/house party/club and get talking randomly, simply because you can't really go without friends, and sometimes if you fancy a night out and the ones you know aren't doing anything, you just go and find some new ones that are.

You can't do that that easily any more though, now everyone's busy and living in houses.
