I've long fancied another one, loved the one I drove back in the 80's, little touches like 'fahrt' on the ignition switch.

Anyway, I'm in a position to afford one and I will shortly have a place to keep it, and am interested to hear what the latest on these cars are, especially in regard to spares.

The place you need is www.02forum.co.uk

I have owned a round light cabriolet since 1988. Used it for years then took it off the road for a resto that I haven't quite got around to yet. I love them, other cars have come and gone for me but the 02 stays in the notion that I will be able to enjoy it again before I'm too old.

Spend some time on the forum and you'll be hooked as well!

E21Mark on here will be able to help. He's heavily in to his classic BMs and last I heard was running an 02. Send him a PM or look his E21 (stunning car) up in Readers Rides

OK SC, at least we're not arguing about speeding on here!

In the early '70s my choice of steed was BMW when I could get my hands on one for a reasonable sum. They were bloody expensive in their day!

The 2002 was arguably the best small saloon ever made. The handling and performance for something of that size was tremendous.

They came in several forms; a standard 2 litre with single choke carb, a slightly higher tuned with a twin choke carb, a Lux version known as the Ti with twin 40s, a different cam and bigger valves, a Tii with Kugelfischer mechanical injection and finally the rare Turbo with flared wheel arches and dramatic badgework and only available in left hand drive.

My favourite, and I had 3 in a row was the Ti. I had an ex works car with a big valve head, a Schrick cam and twin 40 Webers, the standard carbs were Solex. It rode on 70 series Continental Tyres and Koni shocks. It would out-accelerate my 3.8 E Type to 70MPH! It would out handle the E Type on a twisty road leaving it for dead!

The Tii was very quick also but needed regular adjustment to the injection to keep it on song.

Now is the time to buy one of these because values are creeping up and they are getting harder to find. The only real problem with them is rust, so check the shell everywhere.

A brilliant little car and so underrated for many years; coming into its own now.

If I was closer I would have gone and had a look at that.

When I was looking at rusty 2002s about 20 years ago (never did buy one), Jaymic were the specialists.
