What are kids coming to? In the old days when as a man of late teens I played Doom etc and learnt good keyboard and mouse skills actually playing the game.

Tonight I saw my daughter not playing Minecraft but being so lazy she was watching somebody else play it on twitch whilst lots of people, mainly young girls, commentated on it by the side.

Now after reading some of these comments, I was not too happy. Obviously I'm from the age when Gary Glitter sang about being in his gang, not a potential Minecraft grooming parlour. But things have changed. So I put down my beer.

Very Sadly.

No, really sadly.

More sad that than that, it had only just been opened.

And, being side by side I went to this site and logged on. I then started posting about Dad who would sort them all out. To which my daughter suddenly cottoned on and we had a fight over the keyboard. I managed to type I loved my 49 year old wife before everything was deleted.

You know what really rankles? I wrote at one point " I'm a 47 year old dad who has played Doom and you will be gibbed if you say anything a don't like"

To which someone wrote " what does gibbed mean?"

What? Kids. They are supposed to upset their parents by being worse than they were. As Oscar Wilde once said, and I misquote

“Parents begin by loving their children; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them."

Not this time. Pansies. Don't know what gibbed means. I blame the modern sensible world

And when you had to make the screen smaller to make it run a bit more smoother.

People seem to think kids are polluted by things on the internet, a lot of them already have their own filters for crap they don't care about or understand. Kids want to watch minecraft videos not read the comments from people being rude, don;t under estimate their ability to concentrate on what interests them and ignore the rough edges.

Oh and I've played Doom and Minecraft, Minecraft is much better smile

Doom was crap! A month before even Wolfenstein came out, Ultima Underworld was launched. It had a proper 3D engine and even ran on my 386SX20. None of these 2D maps. Even now, I still don't get Doom/Quake and all the linear first-person shooters. Amazing glossy graphics, but almost no meat in it.

Have you played modded Minecraft, such as FTB Infinity? You have to think about things far more deeply than you ever did in iD games, and you really need to watch YouTube videos to see how to get the most out of it.

With you, OPer. Minecraft just does not look interesting to me. Doom was awesome in its time. Took ages before a replacement came out (Quake) and then ages still before I felt there was another FPS worthy of my time (BF1942).

You know what else. They play on the PC using a (shudder) controller - for an FPS!

Doom 3 was the only Game where I actually had to stop playing out of frar once. Love the series, and Wolfenstein 3D was excellent also. Minecraft is a good game in a way that the house creator in the sims was... But there's only so much fun to be had there for me. Setting up a LAN with your friends is a lot more fun.

Lol. Remember that.

Everything is so easy now. Multi-player no longer means humping your pc, screen (& non of your lightweight TFT rubbish either), leads, keyboard etc into your car to get to some church hall that some mates mother had the keys to in order to sit round gibbing in Doom all afternoon... and then wowing at a new Alien mod for Doom someone had somehow gotten hold of...
"They're all over the place"...

You do realise that Doom and Wolfenstein is still active franchises? I'm guessing not.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood was released this May. There is any number of play-throughs on YouTube if you want to see the slick high res graphics. Doom 4 (renamed just Doom) is due in 2016.

Don't get me wrong, I grew up with Doom running on a 486, but whilst Minecraft might look simple and basic it's actually quite a complex game (vs. Doom). Especially so on the PC. I'd be far more chuffed my ten year old is managing his vast inventory of items in Minecraft, building complex structures with Redstone switches and pistons, and working on potions and recipes to get further in Minecraft. It's far more creative and challenging. And when you're low on inventory and desperately trying to get back to home with a score of diamonds it's pretty tense too.

As for watching videos of others playing - kids are sponges for information, so it's no surprise. And better than watching One Directions twitter feed smile

Doon was class and Duke 3D and Quake were even better. You must be soft.

Pah! How about a Panrix? I think I spent an extra £240 or so doubling some graphics or system ram by 2mb!
