hot galvanized
Discussion
hello TVR petrol heads , can anyone help me?
is it ok to hot galvanize the chims chassis? i live in iceland so the weather conditions are not the same here as in the UK. the roads are very salty so the powdercoat is pretty much useless here.
not sure if this is how you type this,i live in iceland so my english is not perfect. but i'll put a link of what hot galvanize is

The internet jury is out on hot dipping a TVR chassis. Some people have without issue, some have and got distortion. Didn't seem to effect Lotus or Land Rover when they hot dip chassis'.
I suspect it comes down to the competence in the person dipping it to prep the item properly and dip it in a thoughtful manner.
You'll need to drill a load of holes in the chassis to allow for hot gases to escape and the glav to flow throughout.
I wouldn't discount it - and may not do when Samy is due.

A guy here on PH also sells hot dipped galvanized chassis, so not such problem if they know what they do.
he's also on FB, Odin.

Odin Verpoorten is doing his best to break into the TVR restoration market. He is based in Hungary, so a bit of a 'trip' from Iceland!
For me the galvanising question is a bit of an unknown, but, as previous - Lotus and R.Rover have gone down this route, seemingly without any issues.
There is a 2-pack epoxy paint on the market that is getting a fair bit of praise in the classic car media. Can't remember the name right now.
The other method that, having worked in the petroleum industry,I'm aware of and is well known and proven, is thermal sprayed aluminium. The application was guaranteed for 25 years on refinery steel vessels and pipework.

Hello all !
This job to do is not one quick. Never place your chassis between other parts for hot dip galvanizing !
The target here is important. Because zinc can also age and tap. For the highst protection stainless
steel is the best but also expensive. The price of stainless steel chassis is ca. 2.5x higher als with
common steel. Therefore we place by this projects of one chassis refit which is maded of tubes only in
places = outrigger stainless steel. Certainly hot dip galvanizing is much more better as powerder coating.
By us the follow by this typ of refit is
1. sandblasting
2. hot dip galvanizing
3. sanblasting
4. powder coating
5. epoxy coating
6. stone chips protetion
7. pu - coating
But be care with the hot dip galvanizing because you have to respect some rules or it will end as disaster.
Kind Regards

I had mine done at McArthur in Bristol as they already had experience with tubular chassis (inc TVR). I drilled 5mm holes at the ends of every tube (the galvanisers should be able to give detailed advice about where) to both allow the zinc to get everywhere but also drain afterward and critically stop pressure build up which can cause distortion, bursting etc.
I'm no expert, so seek the advice of the people doing the work but overall go for someone that has treated a tubular classis before and not just farm gates!
Actually, I do have some amazing advice with which you can't possibly go wrong, and that's to buy my galv chassis'd chimaera which happens to be for sale :-D
Good luck with the build
