if you take the door card off and shine a torch to the bottom hinge (easier to see and identical to the top one) it made as a bracket with 3 bolts, the outer two fix the bracket to the door and the centre one goes into the car body. using a suitable socket check to see if any of the bolts are loose, if so then have someone hold the door in the required position and tighten them. If not then it will be the threaded bobbin mounted in the body that is loose and this is a right pain to sort out, or as phillpot says below, it is the nylon hinge / rusty steel bolt assembly.

It could be the nylon "top hat" that is worn?

Loads been posted on hinges in the past e.g.

There is also some play in the drivers' door of my S2.
A close look revealed that the nylon top hat is missing and the fibre on the body has started to crack (not throw yet).
Now that I've received the nylon hats that I ordered, my questions are:
What is the easiest procedure to remove the door;
How can I repair the damage done to the upper body (the shell of the car) and what material shall I use to repair?

Many thanks,

Best regards,
Geoffrey

Here's and old, but useful, thread to go with the others supplied by phillpot already. This explains how to remove and rehang the doors.

door rehanging

P.S. - "clicky" and "even more clicky" were the same link for me.

yep....always try the obvious first (if it comes to mind!)

are you coming to the Parkmore Sunday ? It is being suggested a run out to Saltburn for the 'Hillclimb' which is on that day.
