My mate went to India on holiday. He got back on New Years Eve. He like me is a resilient 40 something bloke who generally ails nothing and who can eat and drink anything without being ill. Shortly before he came home , he had one of those black henna tattoos - the temporary ones that are applied with a brush. The design was one of those scroll things around his bicep.

A couple of weeks after he got home his arm which had been itchy and irritating since shortly after he had it done started to weep a bit. He thought it might just be an allergic reaction and thought little of it. After a while, the tattoo began to get more red and swollen and weep even more. He applied dressings and ointments but it just apppeared to get worse, and started to ooze pus.

He saw a Casualty doctor on Monday who prescribed anti-biotics but they appeared to have little effect and the infection began to spread down his arm and his face and arms began to get covered in red blotches.

I went to visit him in Hospital this evening where he is now an in-patient on a dermatology ward. Suffering from a severe skin infection in his arm and a secondary infection of impatago all over his body he looks a right bloody mess and is in extreme discomfort.

He is being treated with intravenous anti-biotics and painkillers and is likely to be in hospital for another 4 or 5 days. More likely than not his arm will be permanently scarred.

Hospital staff have told him that this is becoming an increasingly common occurence. Having seen the state of him, I would advise anyone remotely considering it

DO'NT EVER HAVE A HENNA TATTOO!

I wouldn't have one when I was in Spain.
The brown henna that a lot of asians use is ok but its the black henna that's carcenogenic.

Those bloody spaniards, eh Lois?

Serotonin is carcinogenic (an overused word applied to a lot of chemicals).
