Thought id post this in here rather than GG as id like to hear the opinion of the VAG crowd.

My last car was a 3.0 A5, it was fantastic as a car and I had it from 50k to 100k and enjoyed every minute. Never had any trouble with other people or the car really (apart from Audi CS) but thats another matter.

May 2014 I got a new R on lease as many of us have, Iv loved the car and it feels like an occasion every time I get in it but iv had two nightmares neither my fault :

my plates were cloned to another blue R and used for drug dealing and involved in a high speed chase, this resulted in me being pincered off the motorway at high speed and two weeks trying to clear my name,

Then last week my house was ransacked 3 days before my wedding with scrotes looking for the keys too the R, (they got close but didn't find them) So they took £13,000 worth of gadgets and jewellery. I knew they were after the car as they took out all the CCTV covering it first.

My R is now locked in a compound at my office and im driving around in my 2002 E39, Its a semi concious decision, yep the stuff was insured but part of me just wished they had taken the bloody thing.

sad state of affairs?

This part happened to my neighbour, in the day too but they got his car.

They even took his milk, some chocolate bars and ate a banana - But left the iPads, kindles and other devices - they only wanted the car.

They came in my house and took my keys to the golf R too... They also took my laptop but left many other valuables. The iPad that was right next to my keys they didn't take. They didn't even touch all my bottles of scotch!

I've not let it put me off having a nice car. Just gone uber on the security...

Had a few in our area...

Mr Dan - Do you park the car where it can be seen?

Yes, it's a sad state of affairs and has put me off buying a car in the past too.

We currently have an A6 3.0TDi (which is a great car) but it's always been my ambition to own an RS4. Luckily my wife is also a petrol head and we had everything in place to buy one when reading all the forums and all the thefts of interiors, car jackings, break ins and the like put me (and her) off and we 'ended up' with the A6.

On the one hand, you shouldn't let criminals dictate how you live your life, but on the other, why put your family at risk?

If it was just me, maybe it would be a different story, maybe not.

I've ordered a limestone grey one - hopefully it will be a little more discreet.

If you own, rather than lease an R, the best approach would be to dumb it down to look like a Bluemotion diesel.

Either that or fit metal shutters to the doors / windows of your house, and sink a metal pole 6 feet into the ground with which to tether the car to.

Or just buy something under the thieves radar!

This is really annoying me, I fancy a club sport next year but with the winged seats and fancy wheel these are going to be stolen like the r, and I don't have a garage

I wanted an S3 a few months back to replace my Leon, the amount of people I read of getting jacked for keys or houses ransacked I decided to hold tight, more the fact it's my wife who drives it most and has the 2 kids with her I didn't fancy the risk.

Sad times

Given the cheap leases, have considered a Golf R but along with being rather dubious about reliability, plus the wrong number of cylinders, the attraction to the light fingered lot does put me off.
Seems choosing a 3dr might help a little bit, but beyond that, little you can do.

Slightly ill moon mile car works well though smile.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.

Mine is a 3 door but it was on the front on my drive, I live on a A road so allot of people to come past.

It actually makes me feel better that other people have had the same experience, although it is a sad state of affairs.

Im planning on a 3.0T S4 Avant next. Ill take all the badges off it and continue to beef up security.

Sad to say I cant wait to be rid of the golf, for all the wrong reasons.

Hi OP,

Sorry to hear about your situation.. My story has been well documented on here. Unfortunately and maybe I was paranoid, however heard of too many cases on forums and stories not even in the public domain surrounding thefts of these cars and the respective pain they put people through in the process. Also having leased a car for the first time, a massive lesson learnt for me!

I do not miss the car and heard from the police nearly 8 weeks after the theft that it was written off, driven into the back of a skip lorry in South London. Unfortunately the scumbags run out and were never caught.

It's rather depressing replying to this thread, but I've read a few stories on PH regarding this, & I guess many others have too.

I was going to post regarding this but now you (sadly) have has anyone read this months Car magazine long term report on their R, it too has been stolen via a house break in, though seemingly found via the journo publicising on Twitter.

It seems the R is the modern day Cosworth. A sad reflection on what for many has been a great car.

I didn't miss mine at all when it had gone (was stolen)
Then I got another one through VWFS - and I LOVE it all over again, even more than I did the first time smile

What is surprising that given all these thefts how low my insurance on the golf R is...

I insured a passat 1.9 tdi (2007) before I got my replacment golf and it was 50% more than the Golf R.
I got a quote on a 335D and that was double the Golf R

I had a similar experience just after I purchased a B7 RS4 Avant in 2007. It was only a week old when I was awoken to someone trying to smash their way through my front door. Fortunately, They didn't get in and when the Police arrived they mentioned it was one of the most stolen cars at the time. I kept the car for a year and nothing else like this happened. If history repeats itself, the thieves will move onto something else.

Anyway, i have just ordered a Golf R.

I have a Golf R and dont worry about theft. Its insured and I have GAP insurance. There are thousands of them on the road and the thefts must represent a very small percentage.
I leave my keys where they can easily be found. I guess however if I lived in a less rural area where crime was high then I might be more concerned.

^^^^ this.

A colleague recently had his car stolen - also a Golf. It was a 2006 1.6 FSI worth less than £2,000. Also my father had his garage broken into a couple of weeks ago, they got the car open but couldn't manage to get the electric garage door open - his was a 15 year old CLK probably worth about the same as the Sat Nav they got away with.

Cars get stolen, some are expensive and fast, some are old and cheap.

My mum and dad were in a very similar quandary, I stated the same point about thefts and risks, with a chap I knows wife being held at gun point in her own home to get the car which was then promptly used in a robbery. frown

Put my parents off - they'd only get one if the car was garaged or if a house we had gates etc to protect it. Our house only has a driveway (garage is filled with hobby equipment etc) and right next to a main road out of our town so was too much risk for us. WE Settled for an A5 Sportback 3.0 Tdi s-tronic which is still a great car without the hassles of worrying.

Infuriating that some light fingered scummy members of society dictate what the harder working members of society can drive if they can't adequately protect their cars. (Eg big garage etc).
