You know how to enjoy yourself don't you Dave. Go on boy.
It's always tinged with great sadness for me,,, I was there to watch Barry Sheene race a Norton Manx and it was his last ever public ride ( that I'm aware of) and he was interviewed on the start line,,, that was the first time we were informed he had Cancer,,, the whole place went quiet at that news and I was and still am heart broken over his early death.
It's a fantastic meet,,, Wednesday night here in France I parked my bike and went for a beer,,,, usual thing when I return blokes surrounding my bike,,, two French Chefs are looking and in broken English just kept saying Goodwood ,,, and thumbs up.
The weather here today seems like we've got storms in the air so I'll keep my fingers crossed it stays dry for you.

I was there all day yesterday. We stayed in the motorhome on site and were in the pits by 8 AM.
What a brilliant day all round, this must be one of the very few places where you can see millions of pounds worth of cars pounding around the track.
The weather was perfect and we had seats in the chicane grandstand.

I remember watching Rowan Atkinson ,,,, spelling? Mmm,,, racing his own Mk10 Jag, massive thing and you could clearly see him sawing at the huge steering wheel through turn one,,, he's quite some driver in my book,,, it sadly broke down right opposite us and so he got out and sat on the infield watching the race unfold,,, he then got a huge cheer from the crowd as the period tow truck came and picked him up,,,, great memories. What a brilliant day all round, this must be one of the very few places where you can see millions of pounds worth of cars pounding around the track.

It's quite amazing seeing current race drivers chucking those super valuable cars about,,,
I love the attitude of the cars as you can clearly see them sideways and drifting through the turns ,,
I think all racing should be on Low grip tyres,,, sorts the men out from the boys and as a spectator you are aware of the effort put in and how over driving will end in disaster.

Especially the Mark one Cortinas, the Minis and the old Alpha drifting around the bends.
The St Mary's Trophy which is the race with all the old saloon cars, is my favourite by far.
If you, (anyone) have not been there before, it is hard to describe the absolutely perfect condition of hundreds and hundreds of these rare and very special cars.
As an aside,it is something like £260 to camp for the weekend at the circuit. We arrived at about 10.30pm Thursday night, blagged it through security and camped right next to the circuit, result
Especially the Mark one Cortinas, the Minis and the old Alpha drifting around the bends.
The St Mary's Trophy which is the race with all the old saloon cars, is my favourite by far.
If you, (anyone) have not been there before, it is hard to describe the absolutely perfect condition of hundreds and hundreds of these rare and very special cars.
As an aside,it is something like £260 to camp for the weekend at the circuit. We arrived at about 10.30pm Thursday night, blagged it through security and camped right next to the circuit, result
I flew down there and landed on the infield,,, we'd never been before and there was even an old 1930's taxi to pic us up so save walking. I adored the little fencing they'd put up as we went and signed in,, like something g from the Second World War, tally ho chaps
It's like stepping back in time, not a modern vehicle in site,, everyone in period dress, best meet of the year I reckon.

Back on topic, that's the other thing about Goodwood,,,,, old school track that hasn't had the corners tightened to make it slower,,, one of those Balls out tracks,,,, puts hairs on your chest
I hasten to add I've never driven it but I'd really like too one day.
Rigga that's my point about tyres,,,, I think F1 should be about seeing who can drive about 5% over the limit and still hold on to it,,,, the drivers might start sweating again,,,, and we'd see the cars dancing more,,,
Years ago I did some testing for a European endurance carting team,,,, had to make the tyres last for hours,,,,, only Pro carts (Honda engines,,, still did about 85mph),,,, it was a total bore,,,, never allowing any slip angles or scrubbing speed into turns,,,,, my heart rate didn't even rise? It should always be about taking it to the edge and behond and in a way that allows the crowds to see the cars looking like there almost crashing every corner,,,
I think that's why Motorsport as a spectator sport is basically dead,,,, like F1 it looks to safe.
Look at the bikes and you can still see all that risk going on,,,
We need crowds back at the circuits and that's the way to get them there,,,,,
Low grip, plenty of tyre noise and people will re engage.
Rant over,,,, at least we have Goodwood!

I am very lucky to be a RAF liason officer even though l work for living and not a Rupert Especially the Mark one Cortinas, the Minis and the old Alpha drifting around the bends.

My first car was a two door Mk 1 cortina,,, all you do is stiffen up the rear end a bit and you have a pucker Lotus shell,,,, I sold it for 50 quid,,,,, must be worth thousands by now!
